Qamar Eddin Posted by on Jul 24, 2012 in Culture

Qamar Eddin (قمر الدين) is a lovely juice that we traditionally have in Ramadan. It is made with dried apricots (مشمش). Syria is famous for producing it, especially the city of Damascus.

Qamar Eddin cannot be produced at home because it is produced in factories that process apricots in a special way, not suitable for home production. It is dried in the sun, then packed in the shape of square or triangular sheets.

We buy Qamar Eddin as sheets of dried fruit. It tastes sour in its raw state. However, we usually soak it over night and then add sugar to it and mix it together. Then, it needs sieving before serving chilled. The following video explains how it is prepared.

Qamar Eddin can also be served as a dessert when prepared very thick and it can be decorated by nuts or dried fruits like raisins.

Qamar Eddin is rich in Vitamin A, calcium and iron. It tastes lovely, and it is very refreshing, especially after fasting all day long!

I still have about five hours before breaking my fast, and I cannot wait for my qamar eddin drink! Come back again soon for another Ramadan traditional recipe!
