Welcome to this blog post مرحبًا بكم في هذه التدوينة. Christmas is here! Merry Christmas to all عيد ميلاد مجيد للجميع. 🎅🎅🎅

Today, I’d like to introduce you to the Arabic version of النسخة العربية من Jingle Bell song أغنية أجراس الميلاد  that is performed by Fairuz فيروز – the iconic Lebanese singer. The song is called Lailet Eid ليلة عيد – which translates literally to “night of Eid”.

Please note that the word Eid عيد  here doesn’t refer to the Eid celebrated by Muslims “Eid Al-fitr”عيد الفطر  & Eid Al-Adha”.عيد الأضحى  Rather, it refers to Christmas Eve ليلة عيد الميلاد, i.e. the birth of Jesus.

The word Eid عيد

Unlike what’s commonly perceived, the word Eid عيد isn’t only associated with Islamic occasions, but it simply means a happy occasion, in general. It can be symbolically used in everyday Arabic to refer to a big or a special day.

Songs about Eid

In the Arab world, there are two very popular songs that celebrate main religious occasions that are witnessed by Muslim and Christians. While this song – “Lailet Eid” ليلة عيد – is usually associated with Christmas Eve ليلة عيد الميلاد, the song “Ya Leilt El-eid” يا ليلة العيد Oh night of Eid, is associated with “Eid Al-fitr”عيد الفطر & Eid Al-Adha” عيد الأضحى . The song is performed by the iconic Egyptian singer: Umm Kulthoum أم كلثوم . You can check it by clicking here.

Now, let’s move on to the Christmas eve song  🎅🎅🎅

Below, you will find a translation of the lyrics in English.

*The song is in Lebanese Arabic.

Lyrics

كلمات الأغنية

🎅 ليلة عيد.. ليلة عيد 🎅

It’s Christmas Eve.. it’s Christmas Eve

الليلة ليلة عيد

Tonight is Christmas Eve

زينة وناس.. صوت جراس

Ornaments and people.. the sound of bells

عم بترنّ بعيد

are ringing in the distance

ليلة عيد.. ليلة عيد

It’s Christmas Eve.. it’s Christmas Eve

الليلة ليلة عيد

Tonight is Christmas Eve

صوت ولاد.. تياب جداد

The sound of children.. new clothes

وبكرا الحبّ جديد

and tomorrow, love is new

= = = = = = =

عم يتلاقوا الأصحاب

Friends are coming together

الهدية خلف الباب

The gift is behind the door

في سجرة بالدار

There is a tree at home

ويدوروا ولاد صغار

and children are running around

والسجرة صارت عيد

And the tree has become the celebration/Christmas

والعيد سوارة بإيد

And Eid is a bracelet in a hand (worn around a hand)

والإيد تعلق عَ السجرة

And the hand is hanging on the tree

غنية وعناقيد

A song and panicles

= = = = = = = =

يا مغارة كلّا بيوت

Oh cave1*to refer to “Nativity scenes”, full of houses

تلمع متل الياقوت

Shines like a sapphire

كيف جبتي عَ الدار

How did you bring home

تلج، شرايط، واقمار

Snow, ribbons and moons?

مين اللي جاي بعيد

Who is coming from far away?

عم بيرشّ مواعيد

who is sprinkling appointments?

يدقّ بواب الناس ويمشي

Knocks on people’s door and walks away

والخيرعلينا يزيد

And so well-being/blessings increase(s) upon us

= = = = = = = =

Happy holidays everyone!
