This is My Love.. This is My City.. (Part II) Posted by on Aug 15, 2013 in Arabic Language, Culture, Vocabulary

Today, I am going to introduce the second half of Nizar Qabbani’s great poem “This is my Love .. This is my City.. You can see the first half of the poem Here. Nizar wrote this poem in London in the summer of 1994. I did the English translation of the poem. I hope you will enjoy it.

This is My Love .. This is My City ..

I look for a city

That we write whatever we want on its walls

A city that stirs the earthquake inside us

Surprises us .. frightens us .. worries us

A city that does not suppress love or poetry

 And suppress us not

I search for narrow streets that swallow us

(I search) for an adventurous boat

That takes us at night and never gets us back

I choose my exile as I like

And create the time and place

Always choose the side of the poem

And the side of man

I look for a small angle in a restaurant

That listens to our conversation

I look for any good wine

Before we drink it, it drinks us

I look for a poem

That I deposited between your breasts

So, do I have another chance

 To take back the deposit?

I look for wide open beaches

(I look) for any shape that has fled from its shape

(I look) for an odd language

That washes me from my rust

Washes me from the gelation of my Arab roots!!
