No blog about Dutch language and culture would truly be complete if we didn’t at least mention Andre Hazes.  Whether you love him or hate him, he’s here to stay and has won a very particular spot in the hearts of the Dutch.

Andre Hazes was a folk singer who sang a particularly emotional and over the top style of music.  He was only moderately popular until a movie about his life came out, and it seems that once people got a look into his often tumultuous personal life that he rocketed to even higher stardom.  He was married to a woman who stood by him through his alcoholism, and many of his songs are ballads dedicated to his love for her, or him asking for her forgiveness for all the terrible things he had done, or other such tear-jerkers.  I have a Dutch friend who said that Andre Hazes expresses all the emotions that Dutch men are unable to express for themselves.  Well, I can’t argue with one part of that: it is very emotional.  And no real Amsterdam cafe is complete without Andre Hazes playing in the background at least a few times in the evening, since his home base was definitely Amsterdam.  Andre Hazes passed away, but his songs will stay with us and be played over, and over, and over…and over…and over….again.
