Le Bal Masqué Posted by on Oct 7, 2010 in Culture, Vocabulary

The fanciest party I’ve ever been to…

Le chic.

…was not this one. This was my office holiday party last year. Couple of goons.

La fête la plus élégante à laquelle j’ai jamais assisté (assister= to attend) était le Gala Sciences Po en 2008. Sciences Po is a university, or more properly une grande école, meaning a private university ranking among the most elite in France. (Hichem a déjà discuté les grandes écoles.) Le Gala Sciences Po is a black-tie soirée for the future leaders of France and the poorly dressed international students who sneak in for un semestre. Le Gala was held in the old Intercontinental Hotel in Paris et je n’ai jamais vu rien d’aussi chic dans ma vie (I’ve never seen anything so chic in my life).

But perhaps the fanciest party in the world was last week: the Vogue Paris Masquerade Ball. Vous avez déjà entendu parler? You may have already heard of it if you are accro (addicted) to French style blogs, comme moi. La fête a été conçue (the party was conceived) pour les 90 ans de Vogue Paris. For the 90th anniversary, rédactrice en chef Carine Roitfeld invited 600 people to a bal masqué, and the results are all over the internet.

On ne parle pas assez de la mode sur ce blog, which is merciful since I certainly am not qualified to talk about style. Mais je sais bien que j’aime les costumes (et il sera bientôt Halloween!). One can’t help but be fascinated by les photos du bal masqué, even the train wrecks like Tyra Banks. Je vous encourage to jump on the Googles and découvrir cet évènement. I couldn’t find any good videos, but for a sense, try Vogue Paris: Fashion’s Night Out:

Or read about it! Garance Doré, ma bloggeuse préférée (qui écrit en français et en anglais—in French and English!) a publié un super article sur sa tenue pour la fête. You can read l’histoire plein de suspense (full of suspense !) about her outfit (tenue) en français et en anglais.

Cette fête m’a donné tellement envie d’acheter le numéro de septembre de Vogue Paris. But the current issue (numéro) is $15 in the US. Ça vaut le coup? Moins cher qu’un billet d’avion…. or just wait for Halloween and have your own bal masqué!

PS I am truly humbled by Hichem’s générosité. I hope it inspires some of you who think you’ll never maîtriser cette langue si difficile et si ravissante (so difficult and so enchanting): les Français nous soutiennent! With the French supporting us, it is a pleasure to keep studying; with a partner like Hichem, it is a privilege. Je te remercie.
