Just before Christmas the Austrian entertainer Udo Jürgens died. The online edition of the Abendzeitung München reports that memorials will take place in Zurich, Berlin, and Vienna mid-January.

21 December 2014 was a sad day for many Austrian, Swiss, and Germans. Udo Jürgens, one of the most popular germanophone musicians, collapsed while taking a walk in this adopted homeland Switzerland. Some hours later, he died in hospital because of a heart failure. Many fans are still shocked and grieve for him. In compliment to Udo Jürgens, Zurich (Switzerland) and the capitals Vienne (Austria) and Berlin (Germany) organize public memorials where fans can take farewell of their idol.

A German cult figure

Udo Jürgens was definitely a typical German cult figure. His songs were popular with all age groups. In his life, he composed about 1,000 songs and recorded more that 50 albums. One of them is “Ich war noch niemals in New York” (I have never been to New York). This song was released in 1982 and is on the album “Silberstreifen” (silver lining). In 2009, the Independent band Sportfreunde Stiller covered the song.

New York, Hawaii, San Francisco

The song “Ich war noch niemals in New York” is about a man who feels boxed in his everyday life. He wishes to escape from the place where is in order to do the things he has always dreamed of. I think the lyrics are quite good for learners of German as they are very plain. It is like a story being told by a friend in a pub.
