A short story in Greek Posted by on Aug 30, 2017 in Uncategorized

In this post, there is a short story followed by an audio file. Please, note that the story is translated literally, in order to make the use of Greek easier to understand. Most of the verbs are put in the Present Continuous tense, which is not so common in English, because this is the tense we use when we talk about a repeated action.

The concert

The children in the school bus were laughing at the driver’s shirt.

“Look what he’s wearing, a pink shirt!” they said. “It’s like cotton candy.

“No, it’s like a bubble gum.”

They were laughing and speaking loudly but the driver was not paying attention.

Besides, he was never paying attention to what was happening in the school bus.

He was driving in the chaotic city with Olympian calm,

was not honking the horn, not swearing and was never talking to anyone.

He was never listening to music. His eyes were fixed on the road

and was not even greeting the kids who were getting in and off.

He was young, around thirty years old,

but his clothes made him look older.

He was wearing blue pants with a crease.

On top, usually a white or blue shirt and now a pink one.

Two girls, Mirto and Vera,

were talking about a concert that would take place the following day.

“Listen, you have to come, they are fantastic!” said Vera.

“My cousin has seen them (live.)” “Where are they playing?” asked Mirto.

“There, take a look.” Mirto looked at Vera’s mobile phone.

“African percussion night on Saturday March 12

με τον Adegoke Niang και τους μαθητές του στο Asante.

with Adegoke Niang and his students. Venue: Asante.

Ώρα: 10:00 μ.μ.

At 10 p.m. Entrance: 10 euros’, she read.

There was no photo of the band.

On Saturday night, Asante was full of people.

When the band came on stage,

Vera and Mirto almost fell from their chair:

on the stage with five people

was the school driver and was playing xylophone.

Without the pink shirt, with a black t-shirt and jeans

he was playing wild rhythms and was shaking all his body.

When the music ended, Vera and Mirto went to see him.

“Aren’t you the school bus driver?” they asked him.

“Yes, it’s me.” “Your music is very nice (you play very nice).””Thank you.”

The driver was smiling.

He seemed very different than they man they used to see every day.

“Nice t-shirt” said Vera. “Nicer than the pink shirt, right?”

The girls blushed.

“I don’t like it either” said the driver “but it’s the last present my sister gave me

and I wear it sometimes because it reminds me of her.”

Since then, Vera and Mirto were always greeting the driver.

He was greeting them too and from time to time, he was looking at them through the rear view mirror and was smiling to them.
