Combining Prepositions With Articles – Part 2. Posted by on Nov 21, 2016 in Grammar

In today’s exercise, we’re going to focus on combining the Italian definite articles il, lo, la, i, gli, and le (the) with the preposition ‘a‘ (to, at, from, on, with, in the style of).

We’ll begin by reviewing how we construct these preposizioni articolate (preposition/article combinations). This will be followed by an exercise that requires you to fill in the blanks in the Italian text. You’ll find the answers hidden at the end of the blog.

il = masculine singular, e.g. il banco, il negozio. Combined with ‘a‘ = al

lo = masculine singular, used before ‘s’ plus a consonant, ‘z’, or a vowel, e.g. lo stadio, lo zoo. N.B. lo becomes l’ before a vowel, e.g. l’albergo. Combined with a‘ = allo or all’

la = feminine singular, e.g. la scrivania, la piscina. Combined with ‘a‘ = alla. N.B. la becomes l’ before a vowel, e.g. l’erboristeria. Combined with ‘a‘ = all

i = masculine plural, e.g. i banchi, i negozi. Combined with ‘a‘ = ai

gli = masculine plural, used before ‘s’ plus a consonant, ‘z’, or a vowel e.g. gli stadi, gli zoo, gli alberghi. Combined with ‘a‘ = agli

le = feminine plural, e.g. le scrivanie, le piscine, le erboristerie. Combined with ‘a‘ = alle

    Thanks for the great lesson!

  2. Kimberly Koehler:

I have several grammar books, and your explanations are always the clearest. I also like the vocabulary and verb tenses we must also navigate to understand your grammar points.

Your explanations are always clear, and you introduce interesting vocabulary at the same time.

    Grazie. Era un buon esercizio.

  5. Kimberly Koehler:

I am confused about sentence #9. Isn’t “intorno” already a preposition? Why would an article/preposition combination be needed in the blank space? Wouldn’t just an article be correct? Thank you.

    • Geoff:

@Kimberly Koehler Ciao Kimberly, you wrote: I am confused about sentence #9. Isn’t “intorno” already a preposition?”

In this case you need to use the preposizione composta ‘intorno a’ qualcosa/qualcuno = around something/someone. E.g. intorno agli ulivi = around the olive trees, intorno a me = around me, etc.

Tutto chiaro? A presto, Geoff 🙂

  6. Chris:

Serena, thank you for the wonderful work you do with this blog. In learning Italian, I made myself a “cheat sheet” that every other Italian learner who has ever seen it was very impressed with and asked for a copy. I thought maybe your readers would find it helpful. If I may, I’d like to send it to you. If you would like to see if it would be useful, please send me an email with where I can send it and I will forward the PDF. Thanks again for all your hard work, I find it very helpful.
