Last September, our lives were enriched by the surprise arrival of Amber, or Lucky Number Seven as we called her in our previous posts. Little Amber has come a long way since Geoff discovered her abandoned, and at death’s door up in the garden. She’s grown from an adorable kitten into an equally adorable young cat.

When we published our previous three articles about her (see below), many readers asked us to keep them updated on her progress. So here we are with a short article about Amber, written in her own words, in which she compares what she is able to do today with what she could do in the past.

non ho più bisogno della pipetta per mangiare

Stamattina, per la prima volta, sono salita sulla scala a pioli e ho raggiunto il soppalco, dove dormono Geoff e Serena. Ho fatto questo tutto da sola perché loro non si vogliono mai alzare la mattina, così ho preso il coraggio a quattro mani e mi sono decisa. Più tardi c’è stato il problema di ridiscendere la scala a pioli. Sono rimasta indecisa sul da farsi per qualche istante, quindi ho raggiunto il secondo gradino dall’alto e da lì mi sono tuffata sul divano: atterraggio perfetto!

This morning, for the first time, I climbed up the ladder and got on to the mezzanine floor, where Geoff and Serena sleep. I did this all on my own because they never want to get up in the morning, so I got up courage and made up my mind. Later on there was the problem of getting down the ladder again. I couldn’t decide what to do for a few moments, then I got onto the second step from the top and from there dived onto the sofa: perfect landing!

Ho imparato che la ciotola non è un letto

Ormai sono grande, e faccio tante cose che fino a poco tempo non riuscivo a fare. Per esempio, non ho più bisogno della pipetta per mangiare come quando ero piccola, invece ho imparato che la ciotola non è un letto, e adesso mangio i croccantini come un’adulta insieme agli altri gatti.

I’m a grownup now, and I can do lots of things that up until a short while ago I couldn’t manage. For example, I don’t need the pipette to eat anymore like when I was little, now I’ve learned that the food bowl isn’t a bed, and I eat my biscuits like a grownup with the other cats.

And what about that stone out there in the garden? I remember that the first time I saw it, it looked like a mountain! Now I walk past without even noticing it, it’s not much bigger than a pebble from the river.

E che dire delle scale di casa? L’altro giorno Geoff mi ha fatto vedere una foto di me che cercavo di salire le scale: ero tutta allungata e arrivavo appena a toccare la sommità del gradino. Pian pianino ho imparato a scenderle: facevo un salto e cadevo sul gradino di sotto, e così via. Dopo qualche giorno ho cominciato a salirle, ma quanta fatica! Ogni pochi gradini mi dovevo fermare per recuperare le forze. Oggi come oggi li faccio alla velocità del fulmine, sia in giù che in su.

What can I tell you about the staircase? The other day Geoff showed me a photo of me trying to climb the stairs: I was all stretched out, barely managing to touch the top of the step. gradually I learned to go down the stairs: I would jump and fall onto the step below, and so on. After a few days I started to climb them, but how tiring that was! Every few steps I had to stop and get my strength back again. Nowadays I can do it in a flash, both up and down.

Mi piacerebbe mangiare i croccantini di Mimì, che sono proprio speciali!

Chissà cosa farò prossimamente che non riesco ancora a fare oggi? Beh, ci sono due cose che mi piacerebbe fare presto: restare fuori tutta la notte e … mangiare i croccantini di Mimì, che sono proprio speciali!

Who knows what I’ll do next that I can’t yet do? Well, there are two things I’d like to do soon: stay out all night and … eat Mimì’s (the first of our seven cats) biscuits, that are really special!
