Using The Italian Verb Intendere Posted by on Feb 22, 2016 in Grammar

The verb intendere has two main meanings. The first is fairly obvious as it closely resembles its English counterpart, ‘to intend/mean’. Let’s have a look at a few simple examples of this first meaning:

Intendere = to intend/mean

scusi, non intendevo offenderla = sorry, I didn’t mean to offend you (formal)
intendo andare a Lucca giovedì = I intend to go to Lucca on Thursday
e Giorgio, cosa intende fare? = and Giorgio, what does he intend to do?

Instead of the verb intendere, we very often use the expression avere intenzione di (literally: to have intention to). Here are some examples:

scusi, non avevo intenzione di offenderla = sorry, I didn’t intend to offend you (formal)
ho intenzione di andare a Lucca giovedì = I intend to go to Lucca on Thursday
cosa ha intenzione di fare Giorgio? = what does Giorgio mean to do?

The second main translation of intendere is ‘to understand’, here are a few examples:

Intendere = to understand

non so se mi hai inteso = I don’t know if you’ve understood me
scusi, avevo inteso un’altra cosa = excuse me, I understood something else
mi sembra che tu abbia intenso male le mie parole = it seems to me that you’ve misunderstood my words

A common alternative to the expression intendere male (misunderstand – literally: understand badly) is the verb fraintendere:

Fraintendere = to misunderstand

mi sembra che tu abbia frainteso le mie parole = it seems to me that you’ve misunderstood my words
non voglio che lei mi fraintenda = I don’t want you to misunderstand me (formal)
purtroppo ci siamo fraintesi = unfortunately we’ve misunderstood each other

Esercizio = Excercise

Try and complete the following sentences referring to the examples given above (n.b. some will have two possible solutions)

1. Lucia _______ quello che ha detto Marco = Lucia misunderstood what Marco said
2. cosa _______ fare questa fine settimana? = what do you intend to do this weekend?
3. _______ di finire quel lavoro entro oggi? = do you mean to finish that job by today?
4. vi ho detto di lasciarmi in pace, mi _______? = I told you to leave me in peace, have you understood me?
5. non voglio che Franco _______ le mie intenzioni = I don’t want Franco to misunderstand my intentions

Translate the following sentences into Italian using the verb intendere

1. did you understand what the doctor said? ______________
2. I don’t understand what you meant to say ______________
3. what does Eugenia intend to do about her cat? ______________
4. I didn’t mean to upset her ______________
5. I haven’t understood the meaning of this blog ______________ (speriamo di no! = let’s hope not!)

In the next post we’ll take a look at the reflexive verb intendersi. A presto …
