Today’s topic is about learning Japanese grammar.  Some readers have asked me to cover this topic in my post. So, here is a quick lesson about the expressions,  “should be” and “might (maybe)” in Japanese.

 

In Japanese these are expressed as follows:

• Should be ==> ~ はずです。 (~hazu desu)
• Might (maybe) ==> ～かもしれません。(~kamo shiremasen)

Using these expressions, let’s try creating some useful sentences.

 

Should be ==> ~ はずです。 (~hazu desu)

 

1. 今日、娘は　学校に　行っている　はずです。(きょう、むすめは　がっこうに　いっている　はずです。)

Kyo musume wa gakkoni itteiru hazudesu.

==> Today, my daughter should be at school.

 

2.  明日、学校は　やすみの　はずです。（あす、がっこうは　やすみの　はずです。）

Asu, gakko wa yasumino hazudesu.

==> It should be no school tomorrow.

 

3. その　コートは　１万円の　はずです。（その　コートは、　いちまんえんの　はずです。）

Sono ko-to wa ichimanenno hazudesu.

==> The coat should be 10,000 yen.

 

4.  僕たちは、絶対に　ゲームが　出来る　はずです。（ぼくたちは、ぜったいに　ゲームが　できる　はずです。）

Bokutachi wa zettaini ge-muga dekiru hazudesu.

==> We should be able to play games for sure.

 

5.  この問題は　合っている　はずです。（このもんだいは、あっている　はずです。）

Kono mondai wa atteiru hazudesu.

==> This question should be right.

 

 

Might(maybe) ==> ～かもしれません。(~kamo shiremasen)

 

1. このサッカーの　試合は　勝つかも　しれません。（このサッカーの　しあいは　かつかも　しれません。）

Kono sakka-no shiai wa katsukamo shiremasen.

==> We might win this soccer game.

 

2.  このスカートは　来週　セールに　なる　かもしれません。（このスカートは、らいしゅう　セールに　なる　かもしれません。）

Kono skirt wa raishu sale ni narukamo shiremasen.

==> This skirt might go on sale next week.

 

3.  こんなことを　したら　怒られる　かもしれません。（こんなことを　したら　おこられる　かもしれません。）

Konnakotoo shitara okorareru kamoshiremasen.

==> If we do this kid of things, we might get in trouble.

 

4. わたしは　ランチで　ピザを　食べる　かもしれません。（わたしは、ランチで　ピザを　たべる　かもしれません。）

Watashiwa lunch de piza o taberu kamoshiremasen.

==> I might eat pizza at lunch.

 

5.  僕は、このゲームで　負けてしまうかも　しれません。（ぼくは、　このゲームで　まけてしまうかも　しれません。）

Bokuwa kono ge-mu de makete shimaukamo shiremasen.

==> I might lose this game.
