There are two kinds of number in Korea. In this week, you will learn Sino-Korean number.  What is Sino by the way? Sino means china; Sino-Korean word is Chinese character.  Korean has used one’s own speaking language but they didn’t have their own letters for a long time.  Therefore, Korean still uses Sino number.  Let’s study Sino-Korean number from one to ten first.

일/il/one

이/e/two

삼/sam/three

사/sa/four

오/o/five

육/yuk/six

칠/chil/seven

팔/pal/eight

구/goo/nine

십/sip/ten

After memorize these ten numbers, you just need to reuse these ten numbers to make other big numbers. For instance, if you want to say 20, you can add 이+십 (이십/eship/twenty). See more examples below.

19 (십 +구) = 십구

25 (이십 + 오) = 이십오

30 (삼 + 십) = 삼십

38 (삼 + 팔) = 삼십팔

90 (구 + 십) =구십

99 (구십 +구)= 구십구
