Deadly New Years celebration on Polish roads Posted by on Jan 3, 2012 in Culture, Current News

Hopefully all of you had a great New Years weekend, spent either at home or out at a party:)

Unfortunately, every year, people drink and drive and that’s when we have not so happy ending…

According to the Polish police, the New Year’s Eve weekend just witnessed a greater number of overall, and fatal, road accidents than a year earlier.

A total of 250 road accidents (wypadki drogowe) took place, compared to 106 a year ago, with 31 dying – 18 of whom were pedestrians (piesi, przechodnie). The number of people injured (ranni, poszkodowani) on Poland’s roads stood at 305, from 128 a year earlier.

On January 1 2012, the police pulled over 447 drivers who were found to be under the influence of alcohol (pod wpływem alkoholu), an increase on a year earlier. Better weather conditions (lepsze warunki pogodowe) than a year ago also lead to more careless driving (nieostrożna jazda), the police reported.

The 551 fires reported across Poland during the 2011-2012 New Year’s Eve weekend were mainly caused by a failure to observe safety precautions (środki ostrożności/środki bezpieczeństwa) during the lighting of fireworks, the police said. A total of four people were reported to have died due to house fires.

On a slightly brighter note, fewer overall accidents related to the misuse of fireworks were reported than a year earlier.

Crazy weekend…

Do następnego razu… (Till next time…)
