[Música Brasileira] – Belchior

Last week we said adeus (goodbye) to Antônio Carlos Gomes Belchior Fontenelle Fernandes, conhecido (known) simply as Belchior, a Brazilian music icon from the state Ceará, in the northeastern Brazil. One of our country’s most beloved artists, the 70-year old Belchior passed away on April 30th of natural causes due to an aortic rupture. With the news of his death, thousands of fans and the media mourned the cantor e compositor (singer and composer) whose revolutionary albums, like the emblematic Alucinação (1976) or Coração Selvagem (1977) were of major importance to Brazilian music.

The Brazilian singer Belchior

Belchior rose to national sucess in the ‘70s, but his career was interrupted when he stopped performing, releasing new músicas (songs) and had been away from the palcos (stages) and spotlights por anos (for years). The musician was even declared missing by his family, and some believe that he was deeply indebted and having financial difficulties. Others acham (think) that the artist, who was later discovered in a cidade pequena (small town) in Uruguai and was recently living in the house of fans, friends and charity institutions, was simply seeking peace and solitude to enjoy a lifestyle away from fame.

Nevertheless, Belchior’s many unforgettable songs and style will leave many fans longing for more.

How about we practice a little with one of his most famous hits? Listen to Apenas um Rapaz Latino-americano and sign along with the lyrics:

Apenas Um Rapaz Latino-americano

Belchior

Eu sou apenas um rapaz Latino-Americano

I’m just a Latin American boy

Sem dinheiro no banco

No money in the bank

Sem parentes importantes

No important relatives

E vindo do interior

And coming from the countryside

Mas trago de cabeça

But I know by heart

Uma canção do rádio

A song from the radio

Em que um antigo

Where an old

Compositor baiano

Bahian composer

Me dizia

Told me

Tudo é divino

Everything is divine

Tudo é maravilhoso

Everything is wonderful

Mas trago de cabeça

But I know by heart

Uma canção do rádio

A song from the radio

Em que um antigo

Where an old

Compositor baiano

Bahian composer

Me dizia

Told me

Tudo é divino

Everything is divine

Tudo é maravilhoso

Everything is wonderful

Tenho ouvido muitos discos

I have heard many records

Conversado com pessoas

Chatted with people

Caminhado meu caminho

Walked my way

Papo, som, dentro da noite

Talk, sound, into the night

E não tenho um amigo sequer

And I do not have a single friend

Que ainda acredite nisso não

Who still believes in that

Tudo muda!

Everything changes!

E com toda razão

And with all reason

Eu sou apenas um rapaz Latino-Americano

I’m just a Latin American boy

Sem dinheiro no banco

No money in the bank

Sem parentes importantes

No important relatives

E vindo do interior

And coming from the countryside

Mas sei

But I know

Que tudo é proibido

That everything is forbidden

Aliás, eu queria dizer

Actually, I wanted to say

Que tudo é permitido

That everything is allowed

Até beijar você

Even kiss you

No escuro do cinema

In the dark of the movies

Quando ninguém nos vê

When no one sees us

Mas sei

But I know

Que tudo é proibido

That everything is forbidden

Aliás, eu queria dizer

Actually, I wanted to say

Que tudo é permitido

That everything is allowed

Até beijar você

Even kiss you

No escuro do cinema

In the dark of the movies

Quando ninguém nos vê

When no one sees us

Não me peça que eu lhe faça

Do not ask me to do

Uma canção como se deve

A song as I should

Correta, branca, suave

Correct, white, smooth

Muito limpa, muito leve

Very clean, very light

Sons, palavras, são navalhas

Sounds, words, are razors

E eu não posso cantar como convém

And I can not sing like I should

Sem querer ferir ninguém

Not wanting to hurt anyone

Mas não se preocupe meu amigo

But do not worry, my friend

Com os horrores que eu lhe digo

With the horrors I tell you

Isso é somente uma canção

This is just a song

A vida realmente é diferente

Life really is different

Quer dizer

I mean

Ao vivo é muito pior

Live is much worse

Eu sou apenas um rapaz Latino-Americano

I’m just a Latin American boy

Sem dinheiro no banco

No money in the bank

Sem parentes importantes

No important relatives

E vindo do interior

And coming from the countryside

Mas se depois de cantar

But if after singing

Você ainda quiser me atirar

You still want to shoot me

Mate-me logo!

Kill me soon!

À tarde, às três

In the afternoon, at three

Que à noite

Because in the evening

Tenho um compromisso

I have an appointment

E não posso faltar

That I can not miss

Por causa de vocês

Because of you

Mas se depois de cantar

But if after singing

Você ainda quiser me atirar

You still want to shoot me

Mate-me logo!

Kill me soon!

À tarde, às três

In the afternoon, at three

Que à noite

Because in the evening

Tenho um compromisso

I have an appointment

E não posso faltar

That I can not miss

Por causa de vocês

Because of you

Eu sou apenas um rapaz Latino-Americano

I’m just a Latin American boy

Sem dinheiro no banco

No money in the bank

Sem parentes importantes

No important relatives

E vindo do interior

And coming from the countryside

Mas sei que nada é divino

But I know that nothing is divine

Nada, nada é maravilhoso

Nothing, nothing is wonderful

Nada, nada é secreto

Nothing, nothing is secret

Nada, nada é misterioso, não

Nothing, nothing is mysterious, no
