Cartoon: O Pica-Pau (Woody Woodpecker) Posted by on Sep 25, 2012 in Video

Olá, tudo bem?

As a kid I used to love watching O Pica-Pau because he was a screwball and smart at the same time. The cartoon has been around for almost 50 years and reruns of episodes are still broadcast in Brazil and it has a legion of fans.

I chose a 5-minute episode to share with you called Chapeuzinho Vermelho de Araque. Chapeuzinho Vermelho is Little Red Riding Hood and de araque means fake. Watch the video and below are some interesting words and expressions to help you understand it.

Sossegue! – Settle down!
Vai ser moleza! – It’s going to be a piece of cake!
Onde é que vai? – Where are you going?
em churrasco – barbecued
ensopado – stewed
dar um jeito – to do something about
Oh, droga! – Oh, darn it!
Pode entrar! – Come on in!
vovozinha – granny
Passa amanhã! – Come back tomorrow!
seu tique-taque – your heart
Oh, minha nossa! – Wow!
cabeça oca – hollow head (meaning someone who’s not so smart)
Vamos acabar com essa palhaçada! – Let’s stop monkeying around!
logo logo – very soon
Mas que delícia! – Yummy!
Eles viveram felizes para sempre… – They lived happily ever after…
