Election Day Posted by on Oct 6, 2008 in Uncategorized

Yesterday was election day in Brazil, when Brazilians voted for mayor and city councilmen. Though some mayors have been officially elected, others have not. To be elected, the candidate must get at least 50% of the votes. If he gets less, there is a run-off between the top two candidates. Let’s take a look at some of the results:

Mayor of Curitiba: Beto Richa

Mayor of Fortaleza: Luizianne Lins

Mayor of Goiânia: Iris Rezende

Mayor of Recife: João da Costa

The following cities are going to have run-off elections between the top two candidates:

Rio de Janeiro: Eduardo Pães and Fernando Gabeira

São Paulo: Marta Suplicy and Gilberto Kassab

Belo Horizonte: Marcio Lacerda and Leandro Quintão

Porto Alegre: José Fogaça and Maria do Rosário

Salvador: João Carneiro and Walter Pinheiro
