Rio de Janeiro to open largest aquarium in Latin America Posted by on Apr 10, 2008 in Brazilian News

Globo reported that plans are underway to build AquaRio, the largest aquarium in Latin America, one year from now. The construction will take about 20 months.

The aquarium will contain 5.4 million liters of water, which is 0.4 million more liters of water than the current largest aquarium in the region, in Mexico. The institution will have forty two tanks holding 12,000 marine animals of 400 different species.

The construction plans also call for exhibition space, a restaurant, a gift shop, a center for environmental education,  a research center and a scuba school.

In fact, the aquarium will feature a special tank where visitors can scuba dive with “peixes, tubarões e arraias” (fish, sharks, and sting rays).
