Ei, galera! Hello, guys! Como vocês estão hoje? How are you feeling today?

From September 15th to 24th, the Rock in Rio festival, one of the principais e maiores (main and largest) musical events do mundo (in the world) since its first edition in 1985, hosted over trinta (30) attractions each day throughout cinco (5) stages. Held in Rio de Janeiro olympic park, a sports complex where the 2016 summer olympics took place and twice as big as the previous venue, nearly a million people attended the event along the week. In addition to world stars you’re probably already familiar with, such as Justin Timberlake, Maroon 5, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns N’ Roses, The Who and others, many Brazilian artists were also featured as headliners. We’ve selected três (3) of them for you to conhecer melhor (get to know better) and added their performances at Rock in Rio 2017! Let’s rock!

Pregnant with twins, the Brazilian diva stepped onto the palco (stage) alongside übermodel Gisele Bündchen to open the event. A veteran from the festival, having played in many other editions, Sangalo gave her plateia (audience) a string of hits and even ventured at John Lennon’s Imagine. The powerful and charismatic singer from the coastal state of Bahia is one of Brazil’s best-selling and award-winning artists and is also known as Queen of Axé, a popular musical genre in the country.

The second day of Rock in Rio had Maroon 5 as the major attraction, but it also featured the cool and likable Skank, whose setlist included a number of favorites from their carreira (career). The pop rock band from Minas Gerais has enjoyed a nationwide popularity for over vinte (20) years, with 16 albums and over 5 million copies sold since their debut in the ‘90s, having been even in the 1998 worldcup trilha sonora (soundtrack). Skank consistently releases new sucessos (hits) on a yearly basis and has a loyal and solid fanbase in the country. Sony Music’s box set “Soundtrack for a Century” picked Skank as the sole Brazilian artists to be included in their tracks.

Ney Matogrosso

A crowded Sunset Stage assistiu (watched) the striking Ney Matogrosso partner up with the mangue beat group Nação Zumbi and close the event. As one of the most awaited concerts of Rock in Rio, the duet tocou (played) classics from Matogrosso’s legendary band Secos e Molhados, a musical phenomenon in the ‘70s. Surprisingly enough, the artist was previously poorly received in Rock in Rio’s first edition in 1985 and had eggs thrown at him by an angry mob of metal heads shocked by his attire consisting of a skimpy animal print thong. Matogrosso’s original high-pitched voz (voice) and lively, energetic performances have earned him the title of Brazil’s third greatest cantor (singer) of all times by Rolling Stone magazine. The singer, now in his seventies, is still seen as one of most daring and unique in style musicians in the country.
