Do you know what suffix is? Suffix is the ending of a word; it is what comes after the root (the base of the word). Take the word friendship for example: friend is the root and ship is the suffix.

Because some words in English come from the same root as some words in Portuguese (mostly Latin words), the word will be similar in both languages, with a minor difference in the suffix. Let’s take a look:

 

  1. acto/ato; ecto/eto = act/ect
  • Fato = fact
  • Compacto = compact
  • Objeto = object
  • Intelecto = intellect

 

  1. ado/ada = ed
  • Interessado = interested
  • Intimidada = intimidated
  • Especializado = specialized

 

  1. ante/ente/ento = ant/ent
  • Imigranteante = immigrant
  • Inteligente = intelligent
  • Talento = talent
  • Temperamento = temperament

 

  1. ão = on
  • paixão = passion
  • conexão = connection
  • opinião = opinion

 

  1. ável/ível = ible
  • Incrível = incredible
  • Plausível = plausible
  • Responsável = responsible
