Tourism in Brazil: Salvador at Sea Posted by on May 4, 2008 in Uncategorized

The newest way to see the city of Salvador on the water is by caravela, an old-fashioned boat with sails modeled after the real boats used by the Portuguese in the 1500s. Costing R$800,000 to build, the caravel honors the 200 year anniversary of the Portuguese royal family in Brazil.

Called the “Príncipe Regente,” the boat ride costs R$35 and lasts two hours, taking tourists down the coast of Salvador to see the sights from the water. A tour guide dressed in period clothing tells visitors about the city and its history.

Tours leave at 2:30, daily, from the Terminal Náutico da Bahia (the boat terminal), next to the Mercado Modelo.
