…this is what this post is all about: making excuses.
We all need to make excuses some time to get away from an unpleasant conversation so today I’m going to give you some example excuses that you can use and still be polite!
Here are some example situations.
Numa ligação pessoal [During a personal call]
A minha bateria está acabando. [My battery is running out.]
Tem alguém na outra linha. [There’s someone on the other line.]
Estou com visita. [I have guests.]
Tem alguém na porta. [There’s someone at the door.]
Estou no meio de um negócio agora. [I’m in the middle of something right now.]
Não estou podendo falar agora. [You kind of caught me at a bad time.]
No telefone do escritório [On the office phone]
Tem alguém me aguardando. [I have someone waiting for me.]
Estou numa outra ligação. [I have someone else on the other line.]
Estava indo para uma reunião. [I was just about to go to a meeting.]
Ele está em uma / numa reunião. [He’s in a meeting.]
Ele está viajando. [He’s out of town.]
Nossos computadores estão / estavam fora do sistema. [Our computers are / were down.]
Quando não encontramos um arquivo / documento [For being unable to locate a file / document]
Tenho certeza de que está por aqui em algum lugar. [I’m sure it’s around here somewhere.]
Deve estar fora do lugar. [Maybe it got misplaced.]
Ainda não caiu no sistema. [It’s probably still being processed.]
Deve estar entre essa papelada aqui. [It’s probably somewhere in this stack of papers.]
Estamos fora de sistema. [Our computers are down right now.]
Por não ter feito algo [For not having done something]
Andei muito ocupado. [I’ve been really busy.]
Estava muito ocupado. [I was really busy.]
Não deu tempo. [I didn’t have any time.]
Surgiu um imprevisto. [Something came up at the last minute.]
Tinha muito trânsito. [Traffic was horrible.]
O trânsito está péssimo agora de manhã. [The traffic is horrible this morning.]
Fiquei preso no trânsito. [I got stuck in traffic.]
Fiquei preso em uma reunião. [I got stuck in a meeting.]
Meu voo atrasou. [My flight was delayed.]
Surgiu um imprevisto. [Something came up at the last minute.]
Perdi a noção do tempo. [I lost track of time.]
Meu despertador não tocou. [My alarm clock didn’t go off.]
Por ir embora cedo [For leaving early]
Tenho que acordar cedo amanhã. [I have to wake up early tomorrow.]
3:15! Já? [Is that the time? 3:15?]
Tenho que buscar as crianças. [I have to pick up my kids.]
Tenho que buscar um amigo no aeroporto. [I have to pick up a friend at the airport.]
Marquei com um amigo meu. [I’m supposed to meet a friend of mine.]
Tenho que estar num lugar às 7:00. [I’m supposed to be somewhere by 7 o’clock.]
Já estou atrasado. [I’m already late.]
Pela maneira de fazer algo [For the way you do something]
Sempre fiz assim. [That’s the way I’ve always done it.]
Sempre foi feito assim. [That’s the way it’s always been done.]
Fui criado assim. [I was brought up that way.]
É de familia. [It runs in my family.]
Por não entrar em contato [For not communicating]
Ando tendo problemas com meu e-mail. [I’ve been having problems with my e-mail.]
Estava fora do escritório. [I was out of the office.]
Estava viajando. [I was out of town.]
Estava numa reunião. [I was in a meeting.]
Desculpa, mas perdi seu telefone. [Sorry, I somehow lost your phone number.]
Não consegui ligar. [I couldn’t get to a phone.]
Ando ocupadíssimo. [I’ve been incredibly busy.]
There are a lot more situations when you need to make excuses and these are only a few ideas. Keep practicing these sentences because you don’t have to reinvent the wheel- these sentences are READY!
