‘Tis the Season…for holiday Cheer? No, not quite. Why it’s the season for the American Election of course. Whether you’re “celebrating” or not, we are inundated with the latest polling numbers, debates, headlines, etc. The American Election, especially with a presidential race on the ballot, is covered in world news quite closely, especially in Sweden, so let’s take this opportunity to cover some political vocabulary that you can integrate into your Swedish conversations.

As you know, I love 8sidor.se’s articles, for classes, and for the purpose of this blog, they are short, concise, and deliver good B-C-level vocabulary. This week we’ll look at the article Många röstar redan i USA / Many are Already Voting in the U.S,” cover some basic vocabulary that will help you talk about the issues.

8sidor.se summarizes the views of each party into several bullet points, let’s look at how they describe “de två motståndarna / these two opponents”:

Donald Trump från partiet Republikanerna vill bland annat: 
Donald Trump from the Republican Party wants to:

• Sänka skatterna.                                         Lower taxes
• Skydda jobben i USA.                                Protect American Jobs
• Minska invandringen.                                Reduce immigration 
• Vill att staten ska bestämma mindre.     Wants the state* to decide less
• Vill inte förbjuda vapen.                            Does not want to ban weapons
• Vill inte vara med i samarbeten för att kämpa för klimatet.
  Does not want to partake in collaborations against climate change.

*staten here can be translated as “the country” which is this context is referring to the national, or federal government

Joe Biden från partiet Demokraterna vill bland annat: 
Joe Biden from the Democratic Party wants to:

• Ta emot invandrare.                                         Accept immigrants
• Höja lönerna för dem som har lägst lön.       Raise the minimum wage
• Vill att fler amerikaner ska ha rätt till vård.
  Wants more Americans to have the right to healthcare
• Vill kämpa mot ändringar i klimatet och samarbeta om det.
  Wants to fight against climate change and collaborate

There are some key nouns and verbs in there that are crucial to politics vocabulary 101. I suggest that you read the bullet points once more. Then, read the entire article, and test yourself! Can you present the bullet points that align with each candidate? If not, repeat, repeat, repeat!

Den 3 november är det val i USA. Folket ska välja president. Många experter säger att valet är extra viktigt i år. Fler amerikaner har också redan röstat i förväg jämfört med förra valet. Amerikanerna kan välja mellan dagens ledare Donald Trump eller Joe Biden.

De två motståndarna tycker mycket olika i stora frågor. Donald Trump från partiet
Republikanerna vill bland annat:

• Sänka skatterna.
• Skydda jobben i USA.
• Minska invandringen.
• Vill att staten ska bestämma mindre.
• Vill inte förbjuda vapen.
• Vill inte vara med i samarbeten för att kämpa för klimatet.

Joe Biden från partiet Demokraterna vill bland annat:

USA har också fått stora problem på grund av viruset corona.
Många har förlorat sina jobb och alla får inte den vård som de behöver.
Många tror att det är frågor som spelar extra stor roll när folket ska rösta
den här gången.
