An Exciting Event for Women in Algeria Posted by on May 14, 2016 in Arabic Language, Culture

Marhaba! I recently learned of a very interesting event for women in Algeria. Today, I am sharing the news story via Al Arabiya. In contrast to previous posts where I discussed the major plot of the news story, today I want you to make sense of the event in Algeria with minimal hints. As you know by now, I always interested in stories about women in the Arab world, especially those that focus on breaking gender stereotypes and achieving more gender equality. As I have mentioned before, it is very important to practice your reading and writing skills with reading comprehension exercises; however, it is equally important to perfect your listening skills. As always, I have some questions for you to answer. Good luck! Share your thoughts on the news story on this page and/or via our Twitter/Facebook pages.

Questions:

1)  What did the women in Algeria organize?

2) Where did it take place?

3) What was the minimum age set for this race?

4) How long in distance was the race?

5) How much did one individual (Jamila Najjar) travel to participate in this event?

Salam everyone! Born as an American to two originally Arab parents, I have been raised and have spent most of my life in Beirut, Lebanon. I have lived my good times and my bad times in Beirut. I was but a young child when I had to learn to share my toys and food with others as we hid from bombs and fighting during the Lebanese Civil War. I feel my connection to Arabic as both a language and culture is severing and so it is with you, my readers and fellow Arabic lovers, and through you that I wish to reestablish this connection by creating one for you.
