Today’s post is about a song from Libyan Folklore. It’s called وَعْيُوني سَهًارى, which means ‘And my eyes are wide awake’. The version of the song we’re studying today is a ‘modernised’ version نُسْخَة حَدِيثَة of the older version of the song, which was performed by a Libyan singer, called Salaam Qadri سلام قدري. The version we’re studying today is performed by the Libyan singer: الشّاب جيلاني Es-shab Jeelany. The ‘Shab’ bit of the name is a nickname that many Northern African singers use before this first name/ surname. It means ‘The young man’. Some famous singers who have this title are: Cheb Khaled &. Cheb Faudel – from Algeria.

Lyrics
And my eyes are wide awake
I adore you
And my eyes, my eyes are wide awake
I adore you, I swear
And my eyes are wide awake
My heart with him
is attached to, attached to his fire
I adore you, I swear
He is in the centre of my heart
doesn’t know, doesn’t know
of his hidden love
And I want to show/ confess
or to show/ confess
I’m afraid he won’t respond/ accommodate
I’m afraid he won’t respond/ accommodate
The longing increases, the longing increases
And his torture is bitterness
I adore you, I adore you
And my eyes are wide awake
And my eyes are wide awake
I adore you
And my eyes, my eyes are wide awake
I adore you, I swear
= = = = = = = = =
He is the one on my mind
His wraith (ghost) always, his wraith (ghost) always
never left my imagination
And I am to complain to him, to complain to him
and tell him about my state
and tell him about my state
I realised it’s difficult, indeed difficult
I didn’t know his place
I adore you, I adore you
And my eyes are wide awake
