This week is historic for Saudi women who have been allowed to drive for the first time. This video deals with this important topic. Watch  the video and answer the questions that follow. You can use the additional vocabulary list to assist your comprehension.

Answer the following questions in English:

  1. What does ‘Hissa’ say about the first time she drives?

  2. When did Saudi women start driving?

  3. What do Saudi women still need permission for?

Answer the following questions in Arabic:

ماذا حدث بعد الإعلان عن رفع الحظر؟

هل تفضل كل النساء السعوديات قيادة السيارة؟

ما الوضع بالنسبة لبعض نشطاء حقوق المرأة في السعودية؟

Additional vocabulary:

المقود = driving wheel

متشوقة = excited

اضطر إلى = forced to

السائق = driver

منتصف الليل = midnight

قيادة السيارة = driving cars

ثورة = revolution

محافظ = conservative

إذن = permission

الإعلان عن = announcement

رفع الحظر = lifting the ban

مدارس تعليم القيادة = driving schools

على العكس = on the contrary

رخصة = permit/license

نشطاء = activists

حقوق المرأة = women’s rights

وراء القضبان = behind the bars

عارض = opposed

على وجد التحديد = specifically
