Umm Kulthum Festival of Music and Singing Posted by on Mar 4, 2013 in Arabic Language, Culture

Marhaba (مرحبا)! In this post, I would like to share an article that announced a new festival of music and singing in honor of one of the greatest Arab singers ever: Umm Kulthum (أم كلثوم). Along with Fairouz from Lebanon, Umm Koulthoum’s unique musical talent, in her voice and acting, has captured the hearts and minds of many in Egypt, the Arab world and beyond. I am confident that many of you cherish her music and find comfort in her beautiful charming voice. She was a renowned Egyptian patriot and fervently supported one of Egypt’s finest and most charismatic leaders of the 20th century President Gamal Abdel Nasser through her music, by donating large chunks of her profits for the Egyptian military efforts. It is no surprise that many in the Arab world and beyond consider her as the Kawkab Al-Sharq (كوكب الشرق) (Star of the East) and the Lady of Arabic Singing (سيدة الغناء العربي). Until this very day and around 45 years after her death, Umm Kulthum is still considered and regarded as the greatest female artist and performer in Arabic music history.

I am sharing this article from Naharnet, an Arabic newspaper based in Lebanon that covers different economic, political and cultural developments in Lebanon, the Middle East, North Africa and beyond. After presenting this article, I will pose some questions for you to answer. It is an exercise that allows you to reflect on the material you have read. Also, I have added a YouTube video of one of Umm Kulthum’s most musical masterpieces called Enta Omri (إنت عمري), with English subtitles. I will give you all some time to work on your answers and then I will post the answers to the questions and the translation of key words in the article.

Salam everyone! Born as an American to two originally Arab parents, I have been raised and have spent most of my life in Beirut, Lebanon. I have lived my good times and my bad times in Beirut. I was but a young child when I had to learn to share my toys and food with others as we hid from bombs and fighting during the Lebanese Civil War. I feel my connection to Arabic as both a language and culture is severing and so it is with you, my readers and fellow Arabic lovers, and through you that I wish to reestablish this connection by creating one for you.
