Vancouver 2010 Posted by on Feb 16, 2010 in Culture

Five days ago, the Winter Olympics (دورة الألعاب الأولمبية الشتوية) started in Vancouver, Canada. This event has attracted a great deal of attention worldwide, but not so much in the Arab world. There are only 3 Arab countries present in Vancouver Morocco (المغرب), Algeria (الجزائر) and Lebanon (لبنان). There are 5 athletes (خمسة رياضيين) from the three countries; two of them are women. The weak Arab representation is understandable because the weather in Arab countries is dry, desert and warm. There is not much opportunity for winter sports (الألعاب الشتوية) to flourish. In fact, most of these sports do not even have Arabic names because they are not practiced in the Arab world.

I wonder whether Arab countries could start the Desert Olympics (دورة الألعاب الأولمبية الصحراوية) in the near future! Do you think that this can really happen?
