De supporters zijn er klaar voor. Nederland in Boedapest tegen Tsjechië, dat kan toch niet zo moeilijk zijn! Een Oost-Europees land kan de voetbalgrootheid Nederland toch niet verslaan?

Nou ja, in het verleden is het wel vaker gebeurd – Tsjechië heeft Nederland vaker verslaan dan andersom. Sinds 2004 heeft Nederland niet meer van Tsjechië gewonnen! Dus eigenlijk zou Nederland op zijn hoede moeten zijn…

De wedstrijd begint. Er wordt snel naar het doel van de Tsjechen gespeeld. Maar de bal wil er maar niet in, als het schot tenminste al op doel is. Het Tsjechische elftal maakt het Oranje ook niet makkelijk, met maar liefst drie schoten op doel. Maar ook zij hebben moeite in de eerste helft.

Na de pauze gaat het zo door. Er zijn kansen voor beide teams die nog dichter bij een doel komen, maar in de 52ste minuut verandert alles. Door een ongelukkige val door verdediger De Ligt raakt hij de bal en neemt hij hem weg van Tsjechisch topspeler Schick. Zo vermijdt hij, bedoeld of onbedoeld, een doelkans voor de Tsjechen. Eerst krijgt hij geel, maar de videoscheidsrechter denkt daar anders over. Nadat de scheidsrechter nog eens goed naar de herhaling kijkt, neemt hij zijn besluit: Het is rood! En daarmee verliest Nederland één van zijn beste verdedigers en moet met maar tien man door. 

Tsjechië komt steeds dichter bij een doelpunt, terwijl Nederland zich dapper probeert te verdedigen. Maar na aanhoudend hevige aanvallen is de tank leeg, en de Nederlandse spelers worden onoplettend. Met het onverminderd aanvallende spel van de tegenstanders komt dan het eerste doelpunt van de wedstrijd in de 68ste minuut: Tomáš Holeš staat helemaal vrij en kopt de bal erin. 

Het spel van de Nederlanders wordt alsmaar kanslozer. 13 minuten later is het weer raak, en hoe: Met onverminderde snelheid rent Patrik Schick de bal er bijna in. Het is 2-0, en veel gebeurt er niet meer. Nederland is eruit. Wat een pijnlijke avond in Boedapest!

Due to an unfortunate fall by defender De Ligt, he hits the ball and takes it away from Czech top player Schick. In this way, intentionally or unintentionally, he avoids a scoring chance for the Czechs. First he gets yellow, but the video referee has a different idea. After looking closely at the replay, the referee makes his decision: It’s a red card! And with that, the Netherlands loses one of its best defenders and has to continue with only ten men.

The Czech Republic is getting closer and closer to a goal, while the Netherlands tries to defend itself bravely. But after continued fierce attacks, the tank is empty, and the Dutch players become inattentive. With the unabated attacking play of the opponents, the first goal of the game comes in the 68th minute: Tomáš Holeš is completely free and puts the ball in with a header.

Cafés are an important place in Dutch society. Lekker op het terras, you can enjoy a drink in the sparingly few hours of sun that the Netherlands gets. And during sportevenementen (sport tournaments), cafés fill up with fans eager to see their favorite athletes perform at their best. Of course, this was also the case with the Euro 2020. But with last night’s result, the stemming (mood) went down quickly.

But not to worry, fans are already looking forward to the next great tournament, the wereldbeker (World Cup) in 2022. The kwalificaties (qualifications) are starting pretty soon anyway!
