In this post there is a group of words related to money. In Greek, we use different words to describe the money paid to an insurance company, to a freelancer or to buy a ticket for public transport. #1. η τιμή: price

Example:

Η τιμή του βάζου είναι 5000 ευρώ. The price of the vase is 5000 euros.

#2. το αντίτιμο: the money we give in order to buy something

Example:

Χωρίς το ΦΠΑ, το αντίτιμο είναι 150 ευρώ. Without the VAT, the price is 150 euros.

#3. τα ασφάλιστρα: the money we pay to an insurance company

Example:

Μετά το ατύχημα που είχαμε με το αυτοκίνητο, τα ασφάλιστρά μας αυξήθηκαν.

After the car accident we had, the price of the car insurance was risen.

#4. το κόμιστρο: the money we pay for transfer (the price of the ticket). It can be used for public or private transport.

Example:

Αν βγάλετε εβδομαδιαίο εισιτήριο, το κόμιστρο ανά ημέρα είναι φτηνότερο.

If you get a weekly pass, the price per day will be cheaper.

#5. τα εξέταστρα: the money paid in order to participate to exams

Example:

Πρέπει να πληρώσετε άμεσα τα εξέταστρα, αλλιώς ο γιος σας θα αποκλειστεί από τις εξετάσεις.

You have to pay the fee in short time, otherwise your son will be excluded from the exams.

#6. τα δίδακτρα: the money we pay to a private school (it could be a music conservatory or a language school), tuition fees

Example:

H κυρία Ανδρόνικου πληρώνει τα δίδακτρα για το μπαλέτο της εγγονής της.

Mrs Andronikou pays for the fee of her grand daughter’s ballet.

#7. η αμοιβή: the payment we make to a freelancer.

Example:

H αμοιβή του γιατρού είναι 50 ευρώ. Τhe doctor’s fee is 50 euros.

#8. η προμήθεια: commission

Example:

O μεσίτης πήρε μεγάλη προμήθεια για τη μονοκατοικία που πουλήθηκε.

The real estate agent got a high commission for the detached house that has been sold.

#9. τα παράβολα (το παράβολα): fees paid in order to get an official document (such as a passport or a driver’s license)

Example:

H Mαρίνα πλήρωσε τα παράβολα στο ταχυδρομείο.

Marina paid for the fees at the post office.

#10. o φόρος, οι φόροι: tax

Example:

Πληρώνουν πολλούς φόρους για τα κίνητά τους.

They pay many taxes on their property (ακίνητα: real estate)

#11. τo ΦΠΑ (pronunced as Fea Pea A): VAT

Example:

Οι τιμές στα προϊόντα είναι με ΦΠΑ. The prices listed on the products include the VAT.

#12. καταβάλλω (ένα ποσό): to pay (an amount of money)

Example:

To ποσό του ενοικίου καταβάλλεται από την 1η μέχρι τις 5 κάθε μήνα.

The cost of the rent is paid within the first five days of each month.

#13. η συνδρομή: the payment we give in order to subscribe to something

Example:

Ο Νίκος ακύρωσε τη συνδρομή του στο περιοδικό.

Nikos canceled his subscription to the magazine.

#14. η ταρίφα (colloquial): the money we pay a taxi driver

Example:

Μετά τα μεσάνυχτα ισχύει διπλή ταρίφα.

After midnight taxi drivers double the price.

#15. το κόστος: cost

Example:

To κόστος διαμονής είναι 250 ευρώ το βράδυ.

The accommodation costs 260 euros per night.

#16. το πρόστιμο: fine

Example:

O Γιάννης πλήρωσε πρόστιμο γιατί μπήκε στο μετρό χωρίς εισιτήριο.
Yannis paid a fine because he took the metro without having a ticket.

#17. η κλήση: ticket

Example:

H Ελίζα πήρε κλήση γιατί πάρκαρε στο πεζοδρόμιο.

Elisa got a ticket because she let her car on the sidewalk

#18. το εισιτήριο: ticket (for the movie theater, a show or the public transport)

Example:

Έκλεισα εισιτήριο για την ταινία το Σάββατο το βράδυ. I booked a ticket for the movie on Saturday evening.
