Nursery Rhymes and an Irish Christmas Carol Posted by Bridgette on Dec 21, 2021 in Culture, Irish Language
Haigh, a chairde!
Nursery rhymes and song are key when learning language as a kid, so I wanted to share some typical nursery rhymes in Irish, as well as a Christmas carol and a video to accompany it. đ
A haon, a dĂł, muc is bĂł
A haon, a dĂł, muc is bĂł,
A trĂ, a ceathair, brĂłga leathair,
A cĂșig, a sĂ©, cupĂĄn tae,
A seacht, a hocht, seanbhean bhocht,
A naoi, a deich, cĂste te.
One, Two, A Pig and A Cow
One, two, a pig and a cow,
Three, four, leather shoes,
Five, six, a cup of tea,
Seven, eight, a poor old lady,
Nine, ten, a hot cake.
A sheanbhean
“A sheanbhean, a sheanbhean,
A sheanbhean, a sheanbhean,
A sheanbhean, a sheanbhean,
An ĂłlfĂĄ tĂ©?”
“D’Ăłlfainn”, arsa an tseanbhean,
“DĂĄ mbeadh siĂșcra agus bainne ann.
D’Ăłlfainn lĂĄn an channa de,
DĂĄ bhfaighinn uait Ă©.”
Granny, Granny
“Granny, granny,
Granny, granny,
Granny, granny,
Would you drink tea?”
“I’d drink some”, the old lady said,
“If there were sugar and milk in it.
I’d drink the whole can,
If I got it from you.”
Sa ståbla, sa mhåinséar
Sa stĂĄbla, sa mhĂĄinsĂ©ar, tĂĄ naĂonĂĄn ‘na luĂ,
An naĂonĂĄn beag Ăosa ‘bhĂ©as fĂłs linn mar rĂ.
TĂĄ rĂ©altaĂ ag soilsiĂș go hard insan spĂ©ir,
Ar an leanbh beag Ăosa ina luĂ sa mhĂĄinsĂ©ar.
TĂĄ ciĂșnas mĂłr thimpeall; tĂĄ draĂocht san aer!
Tå aoibhneas is åthas ar an domhan go léir.
TĂĄ Aingil na bhFlaithis ag sĂor-mholadh DĂ©.
Ard-mholadh d’Ăosa, don leanbh beag glĂ©.
BĂ linne, a Ăosa; bĂ linne go deo.
BĂ linne san oĂche; bĂ linne sa lĂł.
Tabhair grĂĄ do do phĂĄistĂ; tabhair grĂĄ dĂșinn go sĂor.
Agus bĂmis dĂlis; bĂmis dĂlis go fĂor.
In The Stable, In The Manger
In the stable, in the manger, an infant is lying,
The little infant Jesus who will be our king.
There are stars shining high in the sky,
On the little baby Jesus lying in the manger.
There’s great silence all around; magic is in the air!
There’s blissful joy in the whole world.
Angels of heaven are in an eternal praise of God.
Praise of Jesus, the little bright child.
Be with us, Jesus; be with us forever.
Be with us in the night; be with us in the day.
Give love to your children; give us constant love.
And we’ll be faithful; we’ll be truly faithful.
BeannachtaĂ na bhFĂ©ilte Daoibh – Happy Holidays everyone!
