Una Gita Culturale – Part 1 Posted by on Oct 19, 2017 in Italian Language

Not long ago, Geoff was chatting with a couple of friends in the bar about the imminent arrival of winter and how to pass the time, “perché qua a Pontremoli, non succede un cavolo di niente!”

We need to keep our brains alive somehow, said Geoff … how about we organise una gita culturale (a cultural trip) to somewhere interesting?

The trip was planned, and duly took place … our brains were duly stimulated. Our freshly stimulated brains concocted the idea of a series of three blogs based around our gita: 1. before, 2. during and 3. after.

Part One – The Idea Takes Shape

A group of friends meets up at their usual bar and chat whilst they’re having a cappuccino and a pastry.

Geoff: Did you do anything nice last week end?

Iolanda: Last Saturday I went to Parma to meet some friends. I go there often but I’ve never managed to visit the Cathedral, can you believe it?

Geoff: No?! e il Teatro Farnese l’hai mai visto?
Geoff: Really?! and what about the Teatro Farnese, have you ever seen it?

Iolanda: Il Teatro Farnese? No.
Iolanda: The Teatro Farnese? No.

Geoff: Che vergogna!
Geoff: What a shame! There’s also a beautiful old pharmacy in Parma … what’s it called, Serena?

Serena: L’Antica Spezieria. E’ interessantissima.
Serena: The Antica Spezieria. It’s really interesting. And there’s also the puppet museum ….

Geoff: Yes, the puppet museum is fantastic … you know, puppets like Punch and Judy.

Anthony: Davvero? a me sono sempre piaciuti i burattini, vado matto per Punch and Judy!
Anthony: Really? I’ve always liked puppets, I’m crazy about Punch and Judy!

Iolanda: Già, è vero, lui è bravissimo con i burattini!
Iolanda: Yes, it’s true, he’s really good with puppets!

Serena: Lo sapete che Punch and Judy vengono dalla maschera napoletana Pulcinella?
Serena: Did you know that Punch and Judy come from the Neapolitan character Pulcinella?

Iolanda immediately does a search on her iPad and finds the whole history of Pulcinella and Punch and Judy on the internet.

Geoff: Bisogna assolutamente rimediare!
Geoff: We’ll definitely have to sort that out! How about we organize a cultural trip to Parma?

Iolanda e Anthony: Benissimo!
Iolanda and Anthony: Great!

Iolanda: Andiamo in treno?
Iolanda: Shall we go by train? It’s really handy, the station is close to the centre, and it only costs 15 Euros return.

Geoff: There are four of us, it’s not worth going by train. Let’s take my car, it runs on LPG so it’s cheap. We’ll share the cost of the motorway.

Serena: And we’ll have to find somewhere to park.

Geoff: C’è quel parcheggio sotterraneo dove siamo andati quella volta. Potremo andare là. E’ proprio in centro.
Geoff: There’s that underground car park where we went that time. We could go there. It’s right in the centre.

Iolanda: Yes, even if it cost 15 Euros for the whole day, it will be less than 4 Euros each.

Anthony: Allora, quando andiamo a Parma?
Anthony: So, when are we going to Parma?

Serena: Siete liberi venerdì della settimana prossima?
Serena: Are you free on Friday of next week?

Iolanda: Per me va bene.
Iolanda: That’s fine with me.

Anthony: Anche per me.
Anthony: Me too.

Geoff: Allora facciamo venerdì della settimana prossima. Per che ora partiamo? Otto e mezza?
Geoff: So let’s say Friday of next week. What time shall we leave? Half past eight?

Anthony: Facciamo le nove?
Anthony: Can we do nine o’ clock?

Geoff: Ok, le nove. Non più tardi.
Geoff: Ok, nine. No later.

Anthony e Iolanda: D’accordo, facciamo alle nove.
Anthony and Iolanda: OK, let’s say nine o’clock.

Geoff: Dove c’incontriamo, davanti alla Stazione? E’ abbastanza centrale, no?
Geoff: Where shall we meet, in front of the Railway Station? It’s pretty central, isn’t it?

Anthony e Iolanda: Perfetto
Anthony and Iolanda: Perfect

Geoff: OK, we’ll come and pick you up in front of the Railway Station on Friday at nine.

… to be continued.

  1. Ann:

  2. Bruce Pearson:

We love your blog. My wife and I (both in our 80’s) are looking for a quiet area such as yours to work on our Italian while enjoying the surroundings. Would you be able to recommend someone in or around Pontremoli we can contact regarding lodging and tutoring?
    Many thanks. Bruce and Lee
