Final Fantasy XV: Latin song “Somnus” Posted by on Feb 1, 2020 in Latin Language

Salvete Omnes,

I hope everyone is having a wonderful 2020! I have been a bit under the weather between a sinus infection and gallbladder issues so I have been spending allot (and I mean A LOT) of time sitting up and playing video games. So, I thought about what would be fun but to explore videos from a Latin perspective such as music.

Video games and Latin go together like bread and butter, peanut butter and jelly, like peas and carrots. You can find quite a detailed list here. While some of the Latin songs include generic chanting or unclear words, today’s spotlight focuses on a Latin song Final Fantasy XV’s Somnus:

Latin Lyrics

Deus dormit
Et liberi ignem faciunt
Numquam extinguunt
Ne expergisci possit
Omnia dividit
Tragoedia coram
Amandum quae
Et nocte perpetua
In desperatione
Auroram videre potest
Mane tempus expergiscendi.

English Translation

God sleeps
And his children start a fire,
(Which) they cannot extinguish,
and he will never be able to awaken.
Every tragedy divides,
Before our very eyes,
those things which ought to be loved.
And through this endless night,
In despair,
He can see the dawn,
Which will awake him the next morning.

It is an interesting song and quite interesting when you play the game as the main character. This epic music soars while you are performing feats in the game.
