There are some good and common idioms with verb “make” in English and today we’re going to learn how to say them in Portuguese. Today you’ll have the first five!

01. Make a mountain out of a molehill – fazer tempestade em copo d’água
A Flávia é tão dramática e adora fazer tempestade em copo d’água por qualquer que seja o problema.
Flávia is so dramatic and loves to make a mountain out of a molehill no matter what the problem.
Não vamos fazer tempestade em copo d’água: a situação não é tão ruim quanto parece.
Let’s not make a mountain out of a molehill: the situation isn’t as bad as it seems.
02. Make a move on – dar uma cantada em, dar em cima de
Cuidado com o Leandro – ele está sempre tentando dar uma cantada em toda mulher que ele encontra.
Watch out for Leandro – he’s always trying to make a move on every woman he meets.
Se você não se apressar, algum outro vai dar em cima da garota de vermelho.
If you don’t hurry up, somebody else is going to make a move on the girl in red.
03. Make a point of – fazer questão de alguma coisa, não deixar de fazer algo
A Célia faz questão de ligar para todos os amigos no aniversário deles.
Célia makes a point of calling all her friends on their birthdays.
Quando você for ao Louvre, em Paris, não deixe de ver a Mona Lisa.
When you go to the Louvre in Paris, make a point of seeing the Mona Lisa.
04. Make a scene – fazer um escândalo
Eu sei que a culpa é minha, mas não tem porquê você fazer um escândalo.
I know I’m to blame, but there’s no reason for you to make a scene.
Gostaria que você não fizesse escândalo toda vez que eu discordar de você. Você precisa aprender a respeitar a opinião dos outros.
I wish you didn’t make a scene every time I disagree with you. You have to learn to respect other people’s opinions.
05. Make a stand – enfrentar, oferecer resistência
Já está na hora de alguém enfrentar a violência generalizada em nossa cidade.
It’s about time someone made a stand against the widespread violence in our city.
O exército aliado não teve medo de enfrentar o inimigo e lutou bravamente.
The allied army was not afraid to make a stand against the enemy and fought bravely.
