Olá pessoal!

I have a German friend who speaks Portuguese really, really well. His pronunciation is almost flawless but he hits a wall when it comes to the sounds “ê” and “é”.

As a rule, the “closed e” (ê) is similar to the sound of English words “hay, hate, bay, bait”. However, it stops before the y sound. Here are some examples:

você [you] – Você assistiu o jogo ontem?
quebrar [to break] – Ele quer quebrar o recorde.
pesar [to weigh] – Isso pesou muito no orçamento.
o quê [what] – O que você está fazendo aqui?
por quê? [why?] – Por que ela não veio ainda?
porque [because] – Porque ela está doente.
pelo [by the] – Pelo que você disse, ela não virá.
preço [price] – Qual é o preço disto, por favor?
seguro [safe, insurance] – Este é um lugar seguro.
teve [had] – Ele teve que ir embora.
melhor [better] – Esse filme é melhor que aquele.
veja [see!] – Veja isso!
mesmo [same] – Eles moram no mesmo condomínio.
queremos [we want] – Nós queremos ir embora.

Now the “open e” (é) sounds like the “e” in words like “let, get, better, credit”. Some examples:

pé [foot] – Quebrei meu pé jogando bola.
quebro [I break] – Sou muito cuidadoso. Não quebro nada.
perna [leg] – Ela tem pernas muito bonitas.
era [was, used to be] – Ela era uma das melhores professoras da escola.
até [until] – Vou te esperar até meio-dia.
médico [doctor] – Alguém já chamou o médico?
quero [I want] – Quero ir ao cinema hoje à noite.
quer [he wants] – O que ele quer mesmo?
querem [they want] – Eles não querem fazer a tarefa.
é [is] – Ele é professor de português.
mel [honey] – Mel e limão são bons para a garganta.
pudesse [could] – Se eu pudesse, eu viajaria pelo mundo inteiro.
ideia [idea] – Essa é uma ótima ideia!

Besides the accents ´and ^ there are no real ways to know if the e has an open or closed sound so keep your ears out for when you listen to them, pay close attention and try to practice it.
