Developing communication and speaking skills is a fundamental part of learning a foreign language. This is why expressing yourself orally and interacting with others is the best way to consolidate you abilities. Today’s post will focus on teaching words and collocations related to speaking and communicating in Portuguese, followed by some examples. Agora chega de papo e vamos lá! (Now enough with the chit chat and let’s go!)

Verbs:

falar – speak

• Fale mais alto, por favor! – Speak louder, please!
• Não estamos nos falando – We aren’t speaking to each other
• Preciso falar você você – I need to speak to you

dizer – say

• Não diga bobagens – Don’t say stupid things
• O que ele disse? – What did he say?
• Elas disseram que vão se atrasar – They said they’re gonna be late

conversar – talk

• Meus pais me falaram para nunca conversar com estranhos – My parents told me never to talk to strangers
• Parem de conversar, estamos vendo um filme – Stop talking, we’re watching a movie
• Você ainda conversa com seus amigos de infância? – Do you still talk to your childhood friends?

contar – tell

• Por favor, não conte a ninguém – Please, don’t tell anyone
• Me contem tudo sobre a viagem de vocês – Tell me all about your trip
• Quem foi que te contou? – Who told you?

discutir – discuss

• Vamos discutir isso depois – Lets discuss this later
• Os alunos estão discutindo o livro – The students are discussing the book
• Gosto não se discute – There’s no accounting for taste

Some expressions:

falar sério – to be serious

• Você está falando sério? – Are you serious?
• Ele nunca fala sério – He is never serious
• Fala sério, não estou no clima pra brincadeiras – Be serious, I’m not in the mood for jokes

conversa fiada – chit chat, small talk, prattle, idle talk

• Ele levou tudo muito à sério, mas era só conversa fiada – He took it all very seriously, but it was all just idle talk
• Chega de conversa fiada e vamos ao que interessa – Enough with the chit chat and let’s get to it
• Não tenho paciência para conversa fiada – I can’t stand small talk

trocar (uma) ideia – an informal way of saying “talk”, literally translated as “exchange some ideias”

• Depois preciso trocar umas ideias com você – I need to talk to you later
• E aí, vamos tomar uma e trocar uma ideia? – So, let’s grab a drink and chat?
• Acho que ele gosta de mim, mas a gente ainda nem trocou ideia – I think he’s into me, but we haven’t even talked yet

contar (um) caso – to tell a history, to share an anecdote

• Preciso de contar um caso muito engraçado que aconteceu comigo ontem – I need to tell you a very funny story that happened to me yesterday
• Encontrei com o Léo ontem e ele ficou me contando os casos da viagem dele – I ran into Léo yesterday and he was telling me the stories about his trip
• Meu avô adora contar casos da infância dele – My grandpa love to tell stories from his childhood
