Bom dia, amigos leitores! From the fim (end) of 2020, a buzzword has been making headlines worldwide: A vacina (the vaccine). For some, it represents a esperança (the hope) of getting back to normal with less risk, while for others, the jab remains under suspicion and even rejection. Whether you are a favor ou contra (for or against it), mass vaccination today has been one of the principais objetivos (main goals) of most governments around the globe. As such, many words that we would use only occasionally are now part of our everyday lives. But do you know how to talk about vaccination in Portuguese? Our text today will be broken into two segments, where we will address the main words and expressions related to this topic. Prontos para aprenderem um pouco mais de português?

TOMAR A VACINA | HAVE THE VACCINE

• Estou ansioso para tomar a vacina logo, quero me sentir mais seguro contra o vírus | I look forward to having the vaccine soon, I want to feel safer against the virus.
• O seu bebê já tomou a vacina contra a hepatite? Isso é muito importante, por isso não se esqueça | Did your baby have a hepatitis vaccine yet? This is very important, so don’t forget.

BRAÇO| ARM

• A vacina é aplicada no braço e não dói nada | The vaccine is applied to the arm and it doesn’t hurt at all.
• Por favor, levante a manga de sua camisa para que eu possa aplicar a vacina em seu braço | Please roll up your sleeve so I can apply the vaccine to your arm

CALENDÁRIO DE VACINAÇÃO | VACCINATION SCHEDULE

• Você sabe onde vejo o calendário de vacinação? Preciso saber quando vou poder me vacinar | Do you know where I can check out the vaccination schedule? I need to know when I can get the jab
• O calendário de vacinação está sempre mudando, porque não há muitas vacinas disponíveis no mercado | The vaccination schedule is always changing because there aren’t that many vaccines available on the market.

• A primeira pessoa vacinada no Brasil foi uma enfermeira negra da cidade de São Paulo | The first vaccinated person in Brazil was a black nurse from the city of São Paulo.

IMUNIZAR | IMMUNIZE

• Olha só a alegria da vovó, ela está radiante porque foi imunizada esta semana! | Look at how happy Grandma is, she is radiant because she got the jab/ immunized this week!
• A imunização em massa é necessária para que a gente possa diminuir o contágio de doenças | Mass immunization is necessary so that we can reduce the spread of diseases

GRUPO DE RISCO | (AT) RISK GROUP

• Tenho problemas cardíacos, então faço parte do grupo de risco e posso me vacinar mais cedo | I have a heart condition, so I’m part of the at-risk group that can get vaccinated earlier
• Por acaso você sabe quais são as doenças que fazem parte do grupo de risco? | Do you happen to know which diseases are part of the risk group?

 FAIXA ETÁRIA | AGE GROUP

• Na segunda-feira começa a vacinação de pessoas com a sua faixa etária, não se esqueça disso | On Monday the vaccine for people in your age group starts, don’t forget that
• O calendário de vacinação foi criado levando em conta também a faixa etária das pessoas | The vaccination schedule was created taking into account people’s age groups
