Russian News: Fire in Kemerovo Mall Posted by on Mar 28, 2018 in News

A lot of the Russian internet is discussing a tragedy that happened last Sunday, March 25, in the Western Siberian city of Kemerovo (Кемерово). A fire broke out in a mall and killed at least 64 people, many of them children. Let us look at how it is being covered in Russia.

Meduza reported:

Днём 25 ма́рта в Ке́мерово загоре́лся торго́вый центр «Зи́мняя ви́шня». Пожа́р на́чался на четвёртом этаже́ зда́ния — ря́дом с кинотеа́тром, где в тот моме́нт бы́ло мно́го дете́й: пока́зывали мультфи́льм «Ше́рлок Гномс».

[On the afternoon of March 25, the Winter Cherry shopping mall in Kemerovo caught fire. The fire started on the fourth floor of the building, next to the cinema where a lot of children were at the time — the Sherlock Gnomes animated film was being screened.]

RBC reports a number of safety violations that increased the death toll:

По́сле пожа́ра ста́ло изве́стно, что две́ри в кинотеа́тре, где находи́лась значи́тельная часть поги́бших, бы́ли заблоки́рованы. Лю́ди, находи́вшиеся внутри́, не могли́ поки́нуть помеще́ние.

[It came out after the fire that the doors of the theater where the majority of the victims were were locked. The people inside were not able to leave the premises.]

Систе́ма пожаротуше́ния и пожа́рная сигнализа́ция в ТЦ «Зи́мняя ви́шня» в Ке́мерово находи́лись в испра́вном состоя́нии, одна́ко бы́ли отключены́ охра́ной.

[The fire suppression system and fire alarm in the Winter Cherry mall in Kemerovo were in good working order but had been turned off by the security personnel.]

Svoboda reports on a rally that took place in Kemerovo after the fire:

Они́ тре́бовали че́стного и прозра́чного рассле́дования причи́н траге́дии и наказа́ния вино́вных. Су́дя по всему́, в “Зи́мней ви́шне” бы́ли многокра́тно нару́шены пра́вила пожа́рной безопа́сности.

[An ad hoc rally took place in Kemerovo. It was attended by hundreds of people, including the victims’ relatives. They demanded an honest and transparent investigation of the causes of the tragedy and punishing those responsible. It looks like there were multiple fire safety violations at Winter Cherry.]
