Kräftskiva – Crayfish party Posted by on Sep 14, 2018 in Culture

Now it is the season for crayfish parties all around the country. From the middle of August to the middle of September. It is also the time for picking mushrooms. Compared to last year when it was an amazing mushroom year this year hasn’t been so generous with us. It is probably because of the dry summer.

When it comes to the crayfish party it is popular both in Finland and Sweden and to some extent even in Norway. People usually prefer sea-crayfish on the West-coast of Sweden while sweet-water crayfish is more popular in landlocked places. Some of the most common elements of a crayfish party are the cooked crayfish in water, dill and sometimes beer, but also Västerbottenostpaj. Find a good recipe and a tutorial here and remember the more cheese and cream the better taste to it. 😀 People drink usually beer and snaps to it. Swedish crisp bread is also popular but nowadays it is more common that Swedes buy some baguette and aioli as a side dish. But the celebration doesn’t really stop here. Clothes and decoration are also a big part of the event. Small hats, paper bibs and lampiones with the symbol of crayfish are a necessary to have or let’s say a must for everyone.

But I have also mentioned the mushroom picking and we are in the middle of the season. A lot of people picking mushrooms every year. Let me give you a proper guide about it in my next post. Stay tuned!
