Have you played Backgammon لعبة الطاولة before? If not, in this post, we’ll learn a bit about it’s background history and how to play the game as we pick up some new Arabic vocabulary words. 😉

Backgammon in Arabic is called طاولة meaning “table” or طاولة الزهر since زهر in Arabic means “dice”.

Who invented backgammon?

Most references confirm that the origin of backgammon is Persian. Traces of dice boards used for this game were also found in the Iraqi city of Ur.

🎇سلسلة شرح لعبة طاولة – الأساسيات

لعبة الطاولة أو طاولة الزهر هي لعبة مشهورة جداً في الشرق الأوسط  والبلاد العربية. تتكون اللعبة من صندوق خشبي ممكن أن يكون مزخرفاً أو مطعمة باالصدف أو بقطع خشبية ثمينة. ويحتوي على عدد من الأقراص البلاستيكية  أو الخشبية باللونين الأبيض والأسود. عددها ١٥ قرصاً من كل لون. وحجري نرد سداسي. يجري التحدي باللعبة بين لاعبين فقط وينقسم صندوق اللعب إلى جزئين رئيسيين يفصل بينهما فاصل عامودي طولي ويتعرف عليهم “ببيت اللاعب” و”المنطقة الخارجية”. حيث يضم كل جزء ناحيتين وكل ناحية تحتوي على ست خانات على شكل مثلثات. يصبح مجموع الخانات الكلي ٢٤ خاناً. 

Backgammon is a very popular game in the Middle East and Arab countries. The game consists of a wooden box that can be decorated or inlaid with pearls or precious wooden pieces. It contains a number of black and white plastic or wooden discs. There are 15 discs of each color. And two hexagonal dice. The challenge of the game takes place between two players only. The game box is divided into two main parts separated by a longitudinal divider, which are identified as the “player’s house” and the “outside area”. Each part includes two sides, and each side contains six columns in the form of triangles. The sum of all columns is 24.
