Cluasa Creimirí, Coiníní, agus Bilbithe: A Little Break from our Irish Words for Pets Series Posted by on Jul 29, 2017 in Irish Language

(le Róislín)

Let’s take a little break from peataí as such (our recent theme) and look more closely at, yes, cluasa (ears).  Why?  Well, did you notice those amazing jerboa ears in the last blogpost?  If not, please check it out (nasc thíos).  Or try to find them in the graphic above.  Nach iontach iad?

So I figured we could try some fun phrases saying “the jerboa,” “the ears of the jerboa,” and, to work in some verb practice: “They are the ears of the jerboa” and “Those ears are the jerboa’s.”

Plus we’ll do the same for a gerbil, a rabbit, a bilby (remember discussing Australia’s Easter Bilby a few years back?), and a guinea pig.

Well, I say, “we’ll” but really, I’ll provide the structure and leave some blanks for you to fill in, with an answer key below, of course.   The number of blanks is an exact correspondence.  So, ‘ear goes.  Couldn’t resist.

a)) an  __earbú, the jerboa

Is iad cluasa an __ __ earbú   __ __ __ .  They are the ears of the jerboa.

Is leis an  __gearbú na cluasa sin.  Those ears are the jerboa’s.  (OR: Is leis an  g__earbú …)

Is leis an  __bilbí na cluasa sin.  Those ears are the bilby’s. (OR: Is leis an b__ilbí …)

e)) an mhuc ghuine, the guinea pig

cluasa  __ __   mu__c__   __uine,  the ears of the guinea pig

Is iad cluasa   __ __    mu__c__    __uine   __ __ __.  They are the ears of the guinea pig.

Is leis an  __uc  g__uine na cluasa sin.  Those ears are the guinea pigs.  (OR: Is leis an m__uc  g__uine  …).

I hope you enjoyed that workout.  And you’ll certainly be well prepared to discuss all kinds of ears of members of the orders Rodentia, Lagamorpha, and Peramelemorphia.  So the next time rabbit ears come up in conversation, do write in and let us know.  That’s real rabbit ears, not the old nickname for “aeróga“!  SGF  — Róislín
