Following Serena’s recent article Anyone Want A Kitten, a reader asked us why we hadn’t had Amber sterilised. I thought that my reply might be a good opportunity to do something that we haven’t done in a while: an English to Italian translation. So, here is my explanation of the Amber situation, with Serena’s eloquent translation.

Sterilised … to be honest, just the sound of the word makes me feel slightly ill at ease. Well, as I’ve so often been told, I’m a sensitive bloke.
Sterilizzata … ad essere onesti, solo il suono di questa parola mi fa sentire un po’ a disagio. Ebbene sì, come mi è stato spesso detto, sono un tipo sensibile.

Growing up in a household of females and animals (four younger sisters and just about any variety of mammal, reptile, fish or bird that you could imagine) must have nurtured that side of my nature.
L’essere cresciuto in un ambiente domestico pieno di donne e animali (quattro sorelle più piccole e praticamente ogni varietà di mammiferi, rettili, pesci o uccelli che si possa immaginare) deve aver nutrito quel lato della mia natura.

As a kid exploring the Suffolk countryside, I frequently came home from my ‘voyages’ with orphaned baby rabbits, hedgehogs, sparrows and so on.
Quando da bambino esploravo la campagna in Suffolk, spesso arrivavo a casa dai miei ‘viaggi’ con orfani di conigli, ricci, passeri e così via.

I remember once, when I was about seven, finding the beautiful head of a rabbit that had probably been torn off by a hungry fox. I brought it home and kept it in a secret place behind our house, where I watched it for the next few days with a mixture of fascination and disgust as maggots writhed out of its eye sockets.
Ricordo che una volta, avrò avuto circa sette anni, trovai una bellissima testa di coniglio che era stata probabilmente staccata da una volpe affamata. Of course, my mother eventually discovered the source of the terrible smell that came through the kitchen window and promptly consigned my ‘pet’ to the dustbin, much to my chagrin.
Ovviamente mia madre alla fine scoprì la fonte del terribile odore che entrava dalla finestra della cucina e consegnò prontamente il mio ‘cucciolo’ al bidone della spazzatura, con mio grande disappunto.

Perhaps, from the brief sketch that I’ve given you so far, you can begin to guess why I let Amber have her family. But it’s worth remembering the circumstances of Amber’s arrival in our household.
Probabilmente, da questo breve schizzo che vi ho tracciato finora, riuscite a cominciare a indovinare perché abbia lasciato che Ambra avesse la sua famiglia. Ma vale la pena ricordare le circostanze dell’arrivo di Ambra in casa nostra.

Little Amber was abandoned and left to the horrible fate of being eaten alive by fly larvae when she was just a few days old. She was saved by the fact that I was attracted by her frantic final cries for help from the bottom of our garden. If you haven’t done so already, you can read the story here
La piccola Ambra era stata abbandonata e lasciata all’orribile destino di essere mangiata viva dalle larve di mosca quando aveva solo pochi giorni. Serena, myself and our other cats, are all the family that Amber has ever had. Of the four other female cats that have adopted us Mimì and Jenny had kittens before we had them sterilised. But Gigia and Bella were sterilized whilst still young, and have never had their own litter.
Serena, io e gli altri nostri gatti siamo tutta la famiglia che Ambra ha mai avuto. Delle altre quattro gatte che ci hanno adottato, Mimì e Jenny hanno avuto gattini prima che le facessimo sterilizzare. Ma Gigia e Bella sono state sterilizzate ancora giovani, e non hanno mai avuto la loro cucciolata.

I had always felt a pang of guilt about depriving those two of the most natural thing in the world, their very purpose for being here, and consequently just couldn’t bring myself to do the same thing to our little orphan, Amber.
Ho sempre provato un senso di colpa per aver privato quelle due della cosa più naturale al mondo, il loro preciso scopo per essere qui, e di conseguenza non ho trovato la forza di fare la stessa cosa alla nostra piccola orfana, Ambra.

Did I have any doubts about making that decision? Of course! How would we manage with even more felines to feed? But we always do manage, and things somehow tend to work out alright in the end.
Ho avuto dei dubbi nel prendere questa decisione? Certamente! Come ce l’avremmo fatta con ancora più felini da sfamare? Ma ce la facciamo sempre, e in un modo o nell’altro le cose finiscono col risolversi per il meglio.

So, here we are with our four precious new arrivals. Was it the right decision? Absolutely! One glance at Amber curled carefully inside her basket, enfolding and protecting and nurturing her little ones, and purring in the most contented way imaginable, is enough to completely reassure me that I did the right thing.
E così eccoci qui coi nostri preziosi nuovi arrivi. E’ stata la decisione giusta? Senz’altro! Un’occhiata ad Ambra accuratamente acciambellata nella sua cesta, che avvolge, protegge e nutre i suoi piccoli, e fa le fusa nel modo più contento immaginabile, è sufficiente a rassicurarmi totalmente che ho fatto la cosa giusta.

Amber finally has the family that she never knew, I sense that she feels complete and fulfilled. So, what now? Who knows … let’s find out how this new life adventure unfolds ………
