C’è un castello fantastico, un castello che è rimasto come un fantasma nei cassetti della mia memoria.
There’s a fantastic castle, a castle that has remained like a ghost in the recesses of my memory.

“Esiste davvero, o l’ho sognato? Dove si trova?” mi sono chiesta tante volte. Mi sembrava di ricordare che si trovasse da qualche parte vicino a Firenze, ma non ero sicura dove. Poi un giorno notai un articolo su un giornale che parlava appunto di un castello fantasma. Lessi l’articolo, ed eccolo! era lui … il castello della mia memoria.
I’ve asked myself many times: “Does it really exist, or did I dream it? Where is it?” I seemed to remember that it it was somewhere near Firenze, but I wasn’t sure where. Then one day I noticed an article in a newspaper that talked about a ghost castle. I read the article, and there it was! this was it … the castle from my memory.

Finalmente scoprii il suo nome: era il Castello di Sammezzano, situato vicino a Reggello in provincia di Firenze.
I’d finally discovered its name: it was the Castle of Sammezzano, situated near Reggello in the province of Firenze.

Una mattina di tanti anni fa, quando ero una ragazzina, mio padre annunciò: “Oggi andiamo a fare una gita, vi porto a vedere un posto speciale!” Così partimmo con la nostra piccola e spartana FIAT 127 color verde pisello, mio padre alla guida, la mamma sul sedile passeggeri accanto a lui, ed io e Francesco sul sedile posteriore.
One morning many years ago, when I was a little girl, my father announced: “Today we’re going on a trip, I’m going to take you to a special place!” Thence we set off in our simple little pea green FIAT 127, my father at the wheel, my mother in the passenger seat next to him, and Francesco and I in the back seat.

Dopo un’oretta e mezza di macchina apparve in distanza, su una collina, un castello. Papà lo indicò e disse: “Andiamo lì, a visitare quel castello!”
After an hour and a half’s drive a castle appeared on a hill in the distance. Dad pointed at it and said: “We’re going to visit that castle over there!”

Eravamo eccitati all’idea di visitare un castello, ma la realtà superò di molto le nostre aspettative: il castello era sì un castello, ma molto diverso dal solito … la facciata era tutta decorata da motivi architettonici in stile moresco!
We were excited at the idea of visiting a castle, but the reality greatly exceeded our expectations: yes, it was a castle, but very different from the usual ones … the façade was completely decorated with architectonic motifs in the Moorish stile!

Un signore ci venne incontro all’ingresso e mio padre gli chiese di visitare il castello. Il signore chiamò un’altra persona, che ci fece da Cicerone.
A man came to meet us at the entrance, and my father asked him if we could visit the castle. The man called over someone else who was to be our guide.

L’interno era una cosa davvero incredibile, da ‘Mille e Una Notte’. Mi ricordo un susseguirsi di sale, una più meravigliosa dell’altra! C’era una sala tutta bianca, che sembrava fatta di glassa di zucchero, un’altra ricoperta di piatti di ceramica, un’altra bizantineggiante, e poi una ancora più fantastica di tutte, se possibile, la sala dei pavoni! Non ho parole per descrivere queste meraviglie, ma solo punti esclamativi.
The interior was really incredible, like something out of  ‘One Thousand And One Nights’. I remember a succession of rooms, each one more marvellous than the other! There was a completely white room that seemed to be made of sugar icing, another covered in ceramic plates, another in the Byzantine style, then one that was, if possible, more fantastic than all the rest, the peacock room! I don’t have words to describe these marvels,  just exclamation marks.

Ma cos’è il castello di Sammezzano? E’ una creazione fantastica del marchese fiorentino Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximens d’Aragona, che lo aveva ereditato nel 1818. Fra il 1852 e il 1889 Ferdinando modificò completamente l’aspetto dell’originale edificio seicentesco, trasformandolo nell’esemplare più importante d’Italia, e forse d’Europa, dello stile Orientaleggiante in voga in quel periodo.
So what is the Castle of Sammezzano? It’s a fantastic creation by the Florentine marquis Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximens d’Aragona, who had inherited it in 1818. Between 1852 and 1889 Ferdinando completely modified the original appearance of the 17th century building, transforming it into the most important example in Italy, and perhaps Europe, of the Oriental stile which was in vogue at that time.

Nell’immenso parco Ferdinando fece costruire delle fornaci per realizzare sul posto i materiali necessari: mattoni, piastrelle colorate e stucchi. Gli operai, che erano tutti del luogo, furono appositamente istruiti da lui stesso.
In the immense park, Ferdinando had furnaces constructed in order to produce, in situ, the necessary material: bricks, coloured tiles, and stucco. The workers, who were all local, were specially instructed by himself.

Il marchese Ferdinando si occupò anche dell’organizzazione dell’immenso parco, che contiene la più grande concentrazione di sequoie d’Europa, alberi che vennero fatti venire apposta dall’America.
Marquis Ferdinando also took charge of organising the huge park, which contains the largest concentration of sequoias in Europe. These trees had been purposely brought over from America.

Alla morte di Ferdinando, il castello passò ai suoi eredi, e da lì in varie mani. Durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale venne prima occupato e depredato dai Tedeschi e poi dagli Alleati. Infine fu acquistato da una società che fra il 1970 e il 1990 lo trasformò in un albergo di lusso, visitabile su richiesta. Fu in quel periodo che mio papà lo scoprì per motivi di lavoro e ci portò a visitarlo.
On Ferdinando’s death, the castle was passed on to his heirs, and thence fell into various other hands. During the Second World War it was first occupied and looted by the Germans and then by the Allies. Finally, it was acquired by a corporation which, between 1970 and 1990, transformed it into a luxury hotel, visitable upon request. It was during that period that my father discovered it through his work, and took us there to visit it.

Dopo il fallimento della società alberghiera, purtroppo questo gioiello è ora in completo stato di abbandono e di degrado.
Unfortunately, following the failure of the corporation which managed it, this jewel is now in a complete state of neglect and degradation.
