Training Students to be Global Citizens Posted by on Nov 1, 2010 in Archived Posts

How do we train our country’s children to be global citizens–knowledgeable about the world and in possession of the skills to succeed in it?  An Education Week article has three suggestions for moving the needle in this direction, all of which focus on large-scale systemic changes:

  • The U.S. should make a commitment to developing globally-focused instructors.  We must train at least 100,000 teachers in international subjects and foreign languages.
  • Implement educational benchmarks to help us aim high and achieve our goals.  Benchmarks will help us redefine what we teach, what we measure, and how we train educators.
  • Leverage technology to engage and excite students.  The Millennial Generation is hungry for information, but they seek new ways of learning about the world.

By focusing on macro initiatives without losing sight of teachers and technologies on the ground, we can effect real change among our schools and our culture.
