Transparent Language Online Library Subscriber Receives National Innovator Award Posted by on Jul 15, 2015 in Archived Posts, For Libraries, Library Success Stories

A few months ago, we spoke with the wonderful folks at Jacksonville Public Library (JPL) about how they leverage Transparent Language Online in their library, and they blew us away.

Clearly, we’re not the only ones impressed with their efforts. We’re ecstatic to congratulate Jacksonville Public Library for receiving the 2015 Top Innovator Award in Customer Experience form the Urban Libraries Council!

Kathy Lussier, the Assistant Director for Community Relations and Marketing at JPL, explained that while Transparent Language Online is “one of the best language-learning programs”, it was underutilized by the community. Thus, the E-Services team designed a series of language-specific instructional classes.

JPL combines the power of a human instructor and educational technology, offering 3-part French and Spanish courses in the library’s computer lab. Learners receive in-person instruction, supplemented by the language, grammar, and cultural materials provided in Transparent Language Online. The courses have been so popular that JPL invested in additional laptops for the lab, but still has to turn away interested language learners due to demand. The courses have since expanded to different library branches and new languages, including Tagalog and Mandarin.

The Urban Libraries Council commended JPL for promoting Transparent Language Online in an immersive language course, rather than simply as another free database offered by the library.

Here at Transparent Language, we echo that sentiment!  We are proud to partner with hundreds of libraries around the world to make language materials accessible to learners in innovative ways. If your library is interested in adopting Transparent Language Online, you can learn more here.

And for those of you lucky enough to be in the Jacksonville, Florida area, check out their computer and technology class catalog to check for upcoming language classes. Congratulations, Jacksonville, it’s a pleasure to work with you!
