O natal está chegando, estão animados? Christmas is coming up, are you excited?

As a family holiday, gathering as a group to share a delicious meal is a major part of celebrating Christmas. Each country has its own typical dishes for the date. Today, we are going to present you with a tradicional side dish that is served during Christmas time in Brazil: the farofa.

Although farofa is consumed throughout the year, and not just for Christmas, it usually works as a great accompaniment to pair with the main attraction: the peru (turkey). The dish, a combination of toasted cassava (or manioc) flour with other items, is very easy and simple to make! There are many different ways to prepare a farofa, and you can add the ingredients, meat and spices of your liking to suit your taste. So if you’re interested in making your Christmas dinner even more appetizing, we’ll teach you how to make one.

Ingredientes | Ingredientes

  • 500 g de farinha de mandioca | 500 g of cassava flour
  • 2 dentes de alho amassados | 2 garlic cloves
  • 3 colheres de sopa de azeite | 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cebola média picada | 1 medium onion, chopped
  • ½ xícara de passas | ½ cup raisins
  • Salsinha e cebolinha a gosto | Parsley and chives
  • 100 g de bacon picados | 100 g chopped bacon
  • 2 ovos | 2 eggs

Modo de Preparo | Directions

  • Refogue o alho e a cebola no azeite | Saute the garlic and onion in olive oil
  • Adicione a linguiça e o ovo e frite | Add the bacon and egg and fry
  • Acrescente a farinha aos poucos e mexa | Add the flour gradually and stir
  • Por último, acrescente as passas, a salsinha e a cebolinha | Finally, add the raisins, parsley and chives
