And so another round of the 2014 World Cup of Languages is behind us. In the last four days, we watched four great match-ups, but alas, that also means we can only have four winners!

Esperanto vs. Japanese: An unlikely winner from the Round of 16, Esperanto played well, scoring 266 points, but was simply no match for the Japanese powerhouse, who trounced in the Quater-finals with 2706 points.

French vs. German: Art imitated life in this match-up of the European favorites, but in the World Cup of Languages, we saw quite a different result! French rallied halfway through to score 1334 points, dashing the German hopes and defeating their score of 556 points.

Dutch vs. Italian: Dutch tried its hardest, but met a tragic end versus Italian, losing 1662 points to 291 points. Viva l’Italia!

Korean vs. Arabic: The heavy favorite at this point in the competition, it’s no surprise that Korean dominated this game, scoring 4199 points to Arabic’s respectable 172 points.

Semifinalists

So there you have it, our Semi-Finalists: Japanese will meet French and Italian will meet Korean in the Semi-Finals! Players, you have from now until 9am EST on Thursday 7/10 to help decide who moves on the finals. Scores have been set back to zero, so it’s anyone’s game. Log in, get learning, and we’ll see you on Thursday with the results.

yaaay!!! thank you, meaghan, for the recaps. wow, quite some matches, right? :DD

as for Japanese, I was really worried because yesterday I couldn’t “play” and I had no idea if I can count on the other players. great to know they were there, learning, learning. it is so cool Japanese made it to semifinals 😀

  2. iji:

can people still join the world cup?

    • meaghan:

@iji Yes! Anyone who is interested in exploring new languages (at least the four that remain!) is more than welcome to join still.
