Here are some of the vocabulary words to accompany the most recent blog (nasc thíos) and some practice for each one.  Watch out for all the small changes that happen in Irish: initial consonant mutation, genitive case endings, plural endings, etc.  Remember that a lot of these phrases have the word “of” in the English but the Irish doesn’t include a word for “of.”  Instead, it makes small changes to the beginning and/or end of some words, and occasionally a little change in the middle as well!  Freagraí thíos, mar is gnách.

1)) 1 Feabhra: féile, feast-day (of a saint).  an __ __éile (the feast-day). Lá  __ __éile Bríde (St. Bridget’s Day), and for additional practice: Lá  __ __éile Pádraig (St. Patrick’s Day)

2)) 2 Feabhra: coinneal, candle; coinnle, candles, but coinn__ __ __  for “of candles.” Lá Fhéile Muire na gCoinn__ __ __, Candlemas, lit. (The) Feast Day of Mary of the Candles

3)) 13 Feabhra 2018: Inid, Shrovetide (the three days before Ash Wednesday); Inid__ (of Shrovetide); Máirt Inid __ (Shrove Tuesday, lit. Tuesday of Shrovetide aka Mardi Gras aka Pancake Tuesday)

4)) 14 Feabhra 2018: luaithreach, ashes (NB: this word has a singular ending but the idea is plural). luaithr__ __ __ (of ashes). Céadaoin an Luaithr__ __ __.  (Ash Wednesday)

5) 14 Feabhra: Lá Fhéile Va__lint__ __, Valentine’s Day (Just some slight spelling changes for the Irish version of the name Valentine).  Also Lá Va__lint__ __ and sometimes, Lá San Va__lint__ __

6)) 15 Feabhra (S.A.M.): meallán, little ball, lump, or mass, a diminutive of “meall.” Plural: “mealláin,” little balls, lumps, or masses, but “meall__n” for “of little balls, lumps, or masses.”  *Lá Náisiúnta Meall__n Guma, National Gumdrop Day, lit. National Day of Little Lumps of Gum.  But remember, this isn’t “guma coganta” (chewing gum) as such but an American chewy candy, similar to “gumaí fíona” (“wine-gums” in Ireland and the UK), but with a sugar coating (brat siúcra)

7)) 19 Feabhra 2018 (S.A.M.:) uachtarán, president; uachtaráin, presidents, but “uachtarán” for “of presidents”. Lá na __Uachtarán, Presidents’ Day, in the US, lit. (The) Day of the Presidents

8)) 23 Feabhra: imirt, playing, to play; Im__ __ ! (Play!); *Lá ‘Im__ Leadóg’ (‘Play Tennis’ Day).  And if you wanted to say “playing tennis,” it would be “ag imirt lead__ __ __ __”

9)) 26 Feabhra: cnó, nut; cnónna, nuts; *Lá Náisiúnta na __Cnónna Piostáise (National Pistachio Day) and *Lá Domhanda na __Cnónna Piostáise (World Pistachio Day).  BTW, same answer for both blanks.  Remember, Irish tends to specify “nut” (cnó) with most types of nuts, even ones for which “nut” is optional in English, like pistachios (cnónna piostáise) or pecans (cnónna peacáin).

10)) 27 Feabhra: béar, a bear; béir, bears, but “béar” for “of bears”; *Lá Idirnáisiúnta na __Béar Bán, International Polar Bear Day, lit. international day of white (i.e. polar) bears.
